NITE TATES ATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. SPRINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL P. TOWN, OF SAME PLACE.
HOOK AND EYE FOR GARMENTS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,289, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed October 30, 1895. Serial No. 567,377. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES J. SPRINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hooks and Eyes for Garments, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a hook for a garment or other purpose, formed of a sheet-metal back plate and a tongue, which latter is composed of part of said plate properly bent up therefrom and shaped as described.
It also consists of an eye of novel construction.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a hook embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan View of the eye member that may be employed. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 5 represents a top or plan view of the hook and eye connected. Fig. 6 represents a top or plan view of another form of the hook.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hook member formed of the flat sheet-metal plate A, and B designates a longitudinallyextending tongue, which is integral with said plate and formed by cutting the plate in such manner as to disconnect a portion of the center of said plate, said portion then being bent out at its uncut end O, raised on its back, as at D,intermediate of its ends, and made salient at its outer end E, it being noticed that the plate A has provided in the main tlie material for the formation of the tongue B. The sides of the tongue are right-lined and parallel, and the free end of the said tongue extends beyond the bifurcated end of the body.
F designates an eye which is of the form of a loop and produced of flat sheet metal, it being seen that when the cross-bar G of said eye is presented to the end E of the tongue the latter is raised so as to permit said crossbar to pass under the tongue, after which said cross-bar enters the space of the raised back D and bears against the bend 0, thus firmly connecting the hook and eye, said back forming a guard which prevents disconnection of the parts, it being also seen that the eye lies fiat on the plate A, so that the two parts occupy but small space.
The width of the bodies of the eye and hook members is substantially the same, so that there are no projecting edges of one over the other, except at the ends, and as both of the said bodies are fiat they contact with each other so as to fit closely When engaged.
The hook member is formed with the eyes II, and the eye member is formed with the eyes J for fastening to the place of service by stitching, riveting, or otherwise.
In lieu of the eyes H, the members may be provided with prongs or spurs, as shown at K, Fig. 6, the same being adapted to pierce the garment, &c., and thus be held thereon. It will also be seen that the plate A is widened or broad on the body A and bifurcated at the other end, forming flaring limbs A This forms a broad flat base for the hook member and prevents overturning of the same.
The eye F has its inner side walls a, which are Within the body or main portion of the same, right-lined and at substantially a right angle to the inner end Wall a, so that the portions of the same that contact with the bend G of the hook fit snugly thereagainst and prevent lateral motion of either the hook or eye members, thus insuring the proper engagement and interlocking of said parts.
The limbs F of the eye member are flaring, and with the remainder of said member lies flat on the contiguous portion of the plate A of the hook member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ahook consisting of a fiat plate A, having the central portion of the body of the same separated from the adjacent side portion, forming the set-out hook B integral at one end with the non-separated portion 0 of said body and side limbs A said hook having a raised back and a free outer end, substantially as described.
JAMES J. SPRINGER.
