SPRING-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,336, dated October 11, 1892.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES CLEMENT NEWEY, hook and eye manufacturer,a subject of the Queen-of Great Britain, residing at Brearley Street, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hooks, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 8,273, dated May 2, 1892,) of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of springhooks for use with eyes as fastenings for dresses and analogous articles, by the use of which improved hooks the accidental separation of the hook from the eye when in use is prevented.

My invention consists in flattening out, and thereby spreading laterally, the bottom of the bill or beak of the hook by pressing or otherwise shaping the same. This part of the hook when so shaped acts as a spring and causes the upper part of the bill of the hook to press against the indentation at the back of the hook sufficiently to allowthe eye to pass into the hook with a gentle pressure and at the same time prevents the eye becoming accidentally unfastened.

The hooks may be made of wire or sheet metal, and the indentation may be either on the bill or at the back of the hook, or on both.

In order that my said invention may be particularly described and ascertained, reference is hereby made to the accompanying draw- .ings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Figure 1 is a front view, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are side views, showing different methods of carrying out my invention.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a a are the portions of the metal which are spread out by pressure or other suitable means, and whereby the thickness is reduced in one direction, the fibers of the metal are compressed, and the elasticity is increased.

In Fig. 3 the compressed or flattened portion a is made lower down. InFigs. 4 and 5 it is shown at the lower bend.

1), Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, is the upper part of the bill, which is made to press against the indentation a, formed in the back of the hook. The indentation may be made in the upper part of the bill of the hook, as shown at b in Fig. 5; also, indentations may be formed in both the back of the hook and the bill of the hook, the two indentations touching each other or nearly so.

I am aware of United States Letters Patent Nos. 2,978 and 45,411, and also of United States Letters Patent, granted to myself, No. 393,656, and I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming what is shown in either of the said patents.

Having thus described my invention, what i I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, the spring-hook herein shown and described, constructed with the compressed flattened spring portion a to give elasticity to the bill of the hook and having one of its parts indented to form a raised portion, as set forth, so that the spring portion will hold one of the parts always in contact with the raised portion of the indentation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
