Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. STONER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CHILDS CARRIAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,066, dated May 26, 1896.
Application filed August 24, 1 895.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. STONER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for prevent ing accident by the running of a childs carriage when released from the hand of the attendant; and my said invention consists of a self-acting device for engaging the wheel of the carriage, which device is normally locked, and is disengaged by the hand when placed on the bar by which the carriage is propelled.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a carriage, showing my improved attachment; and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1.
A represents the propelling handle or bar; B, the frame; 0, the rear axle; E E, the rear Wheels; F, the body, and G the springs.
H is a longitudinally-movable rod mounted in guides I I on the frame B, and the rod H is held by the spring J normally in a position whereby its rubber-faced end K is engaged with the Wheel E so as to lock the same. A lever L, fulcrumed at M in the bracket N, fixed to the frame B, is attached to the rodH at O and terminates at its upper end in a suitable handle P adjacent to and movable along the handle or bar A.
WVhen the attendant desires to wheel the carriage, the hand is so placed on the bar A as to move and retain the handle P at the Serial No. 560,319. (No model.)
position P, (indicated by dotted lines,) withdrawing the engaging device K from the Wheel. Whenever the hand is removed from the bar A, the engaging device resumes its normal position and the carriage cannot move by causes of gravitation or wind, 850., while the attention of the attendant is diverted or occupied, and serious accidents heretofore of frequent occurrence are effectually prevented.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific construction herein shown, as the same may be variously modified without departing from the principle of my invention; but I What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a childs carriage, the combination with a suitable frame B, mounted in fixed relation with the axis of the Wheels, and a hand propelling-barA, of a laterally-shifting engaging rod H, mounted on said frame and adapted to engage with a wheel of the carriage, and a lever L, fulcrumed on said frame connected at its lower end directly to said rod H, and terminating at its upper end in a laterallymovable handle adjacent to and movable in the length of said propelling-bar.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 23d day of August, A. D. 1895.
JOHN B. STONER.
