IMPROVEMENT IN FIBROUS PACKING FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,054, dated July I3, 1866 g antedated J une 19, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. L. HUSBAND, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing and Making' Packing for Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of making the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which the whole iigure represents a section of packing, for instance. The lines crossing each other indicate the twinebraiding inclosing the cotton (for instance) fiber into which has been incorporated the pulverized (for instance) red or tawny elm (Ulmus ombra) bark.
To manufacture the packing take raw cotton, for instance, and card it into thin sheets, over which I dust or scatter the pulverized or ground red or tawny elm (for instance) bark.
I then loosely spin or twist it into a rope, and when so roped I take a number of such ropes and twist them loosely together so as to form suitable-sized packing, which I braid with twine, leaving small meshes or spaces between the parallel cords of twine, so that the steam acting on the packing will develop niucilaginous properties of the red or tawny elm bark.
To one ponnd'of fiber I use, for instance, a half-pound of the bark.
What I claim as iny invention is- The manufacture of packing for steam-engines, as hereinbefore described and more specifically set forth, and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent therefor.
