DENTAL VULGANIZER. No. 560,327. Patented May 19, 1896.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IOHN E. ROBIE, OF BUFFALO, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUFFALO DENTAL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DENTAL VULCANIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,327, dated May 19, 1896. Application filed January 11, 1896. Serial No 575,063. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. ROBIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo,
in the county of Erie and State of New York,
have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Dental Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dental vulcanizers in which a detachable yoke or cross-bar is employed for clamping the cover upon the valcanizing-pot.
The object of my invention is to provide the Vulcanizer with a' reliable clamping yoke which can be readily applied and removed from the pot and which is free from loose or swinging parts that are liable to become detached or interfere with the easy manipulation of the yoke.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a vulcanizer provided Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the vulcanizer at right angles to Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A is the vulcanizing-pot, provided at its upper end with an outwardly-projecting rim or flange a, and B is the cover provided in the under side of its marginal portion with a packing-ring b, which rests upon the rim of the pot, and with a depending rim 1), which fits into the pot.
O is a projecting ring, collar, or flange secured around the upper portion of the pot and bearing against the under side of the rim a.
D represents the yoke or cross-bar, whereby the cover is clamped upon the pot. This yoke engages at one end in an upright loop or vertically-slotted bar E, secured to the ring 0 on one side of the pot and extending upward above the cover. The upper cross-bar of this loop is provided with a sharp or V-shaped lower edge e, which fits in a corresponding notch or depression cl, formed in the adjacent upper side of the yoke, whereby the yoke is held against longitudinal displacement in the loop. The yoke is provided at its opposite end with a depending arm (1, terminating in a hook or nose (1 which engages under the lower edge of the ring 0 of the pot. This depending arm is confined against lateral displacement by a pair of upright lugs f, arranged on the ring 0 on opposite sides of the arm, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The portion of the ring with which the hook 61 engages is preferably undercut or inclined outwardly as shown in Fig. 1, to more reliably interlock the hook with the ring.
G is a clamping-bolt engaging in an internally-screW-threaded opening formed in a central boss or enlargement h of the yoke and bearing at its lower end upon the cover, whereby the depending hook d of the yoke is held in engagement with the ring 0 of the pot and the opposite end of the yoke in engagement with the loop E. The cover is preferably provided with a conical or concave seat i for the lower end of the clamping-bolt.
J is a handle extending horizontally from the front end of the yoke and arranged in line therewith.
7c is a pin or projection secured to the loop E and entering a notch or recess Z formed in the edge of the cover when the latter is applied to the pot, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the cover is always placed in the same position on the pot. In applying the yoke to the pot for clamping the cover the rear end of I the yoke is passed through the loop E, and the depending arm cl of the yoke is at the same time engaged between the lugs f on the front side of the pot, so as to bring the hook of said arm underneath the ring 0 of the pot, the clamping bolt being unscrewed sufficiently to permit of this operation. The clampingbolt is then tightened, whereby the yoke is raised, and its notched front end and hooked rear end are caused to interlock securely with the loop E and the under side of the ring 0, respectively, thus tightly clamping the cover on the pot. In tightening the clamping-bolt the V-shaped edge e of the loop E tends to center the yoke or draw it into its proper position in case the notch 01 of the 5 yoke does not accurately register with said edge after inserting the yoke in the loop. The conical seat 2' in the center of the cover aids this action. The yoke is readily removed for releasing the coverby loosening the ICC clamping-bolt and withdrawing the yoke from the loop E. The lugs f may be omitted, if desired; but they are preferably employed.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination with a vuloanizing-pot provided on one side with an upright loop extending above the upper end thereof, and below said upper end with a flange or ring, of a cover seated on the pot, a removable yoke extending across the cover and engaging at one end in said loop and provided at its opposite end with a depending hook which engages under said ring or flange, and a vertical clamping-bolt carried by the yoke and bearing upon the cover, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a vulcanizing-pot provided on one side with an upright loop extending above the upper end thereof, and below said upper end with a flange or ring havin g a pair of projecting lugs, of a cover seated on the pot, a removable yoke extending across the cover and engaging at one end in said loop and provided at its opposite end wit-h a depending arm engaging between said lugs and terminating in a hook which interlocks with said ring or flange, and a clamping-bolt carried by said yoke and bearing upon the cover, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a vuleanizingpot provided below its upper end with a ring or flange and on one side thereof with an upright loop having its upper bar provided with a V-shaped lower edge, of a cover and a yoke extending across the cover and provided at one end with a depending hook which inter looks with said ring or flange and at its opposite end with a notch or recess which engages with the V-shaped cross-bar of said loop, and a clamping device carried by the yoke and bearing upon the cover, substantially as set forth.
\Vitness my hand this 8th day of January, 1896.
JOHN E. ROBIE. lVitnesse.
