RECEPTACLE-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1914.
Application filed September 23, 1913. Serial No. 791,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. FoLLnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Receptacle-Cap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates tocaps for receptacles; and has reference more particularly to caps for jars or similar vessels;
The object thereof is to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive cap of sanitary material, such as glass or porcelain, which can be easily removed and cleaned; and which is mounted to positively close the mouth of the receptacle.
I obtain the above object by providing a cap in the shape of a plug, which is locked to the receptacle by means carried by the receptacle and which are removably associated with the plug.
The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of an end of a vessel provided with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view located at right angles on Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and Fig. 4, a view showing the detail of construction of a member by means of which the cap is secured to the vessel and also which carries the locking means on the receptacle.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents a jar which is provided with the customary enlarged portion 6 on the exterior surface thereof adjacent the mouth. This enlargement 6 forms a shoulder on the exterior surface of the neck of the jar. Positioned on the neck of the jar, and abutting against the said shoulder, is a member 7, preferably formed of a steel ribbon having at one end a tongue 8 and at the opposite end an aperture 9 adapted to receive the tongue and whereby the band can be encircled about the neck of the jar and secured thereto. The band or member 7 is also provided with a pair of protuberances or pockets 10 dia metrically opposite and each having a central aperture 11.- Pivotally mounted in said apertures is the customary U-shaped' wire eccentric 12. i
Engaging the mouth of the jar is a plug 13, the circular shoulder 14 of which is adapted to rest on the edge of the mouthpiece of the jar. A member 15, similar to member 7 is mounted on the plug above the shoulder 14. The apertures 16 of the pockets 17 of the member 15 are each adapted to receive one hooked-shaped end of a member 18, the opposite hooked-shaped end of the said member being engaged in the eccentric portion of the U-shaped wire member 12.
When the U-shaped member 12 is in posi tion indicated in Fig. 2, the members 18, in virtue of their engagement with the eccentric portion of the member 12, will pull on member 15 thereby drawing the plug 13 to 'ward the jar 5. To make the engagement between the plug and the jar more positive, a rubber gusset 19 is provided at the circular shoulder 14. vVhen the U-shaped member 12 is pulled in the direction of the arrow, the drawing action on the plug being relieved, the members 18 can be disengaged from the member 15, thereby permitting the separation of the plug from the jar. This separation will permit the cleaning of the plug more perfectly, as it permits the entire separation of the plug from the receptacle. Themember 15 can be removed from the plug by simply pulling toward the top of the plug, thereby permitting also a perfect cleaning of the member 15. The member 7, which is tightly secured to the neck of the jar, carries the Ushaped wire member 12, and, as shown in the drawings, the members 18 are removably associated with said U-shaped member, but if desired can remain permanently attached to the eccentric portion of said members with the upper hook shaped ends of the said members being adapted to engage the protuberances or pockets 17 of the member 15 provided on the plug. The provision of the member 15 on the plug 13 helps to distribute more evenly the drawing action on the contacting surfaces produced by the wire eccentric 12.
Having thus described my invention,- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A receptacle cap comprising, a plug adapted to fit into the mouth of a receptacle; a member carried by said plug; a similar member carried by the receptacle; a U-shaped eccentric wire member pivotally mounted in said member carried by the receptacle; and members removably associated with said U-shaped eccentric Wire member and said member carried by the plug, where, by said plug is secured to the receptacle by said U-shaped wire. 7
2. A receptacle cap comprising, a plug having a circular shoulder adapted to engage the edge of the mouth of a receptacle; a member removably e associated with the plug and positioned above the shoulder, said member having diametrically opposite pockets; a similar member positioned on the receptacle; a U-shaped eccentric wire member positioned in said member on the receptacle; and means carried by said U-shaped member adapted to engage the pockets of said member carried by the plug, whereby said plug is secured to the receptacle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A receptacle cap comprising, a plug having a circular shoulder adapted to engage the edge of the mouth of a receptacle; a member removably associated with the Copies 01 this patent may be obtained for plug and positioned above the shoulder, said member having diametrically opposite protuberances, each of which have a central aperture therein; a similar member on the receptacle; a U-shaped member pivotally mounted in the aperture of the protuberances of the said second member mounted on the receptacle, said U-shaped member having eyelets eccentrically mounted with respect to the ends of said U-shaped mem: ber engaging the apertures; members having hook-shaped ends adapted to engage the eyelets of the Ushaped member and the apertures of the protuberances of the member mounted on the plug whereby the plug is secured to the receptacle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
