Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. BEEHLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,936, dated October 6, 1896. Application led April 13-l 1896. Serial No. 587,419. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, CHARLES W. BEEHLER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the' following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to a cheap and effective box-fastenerwell adapted for use on eggboxes, cracker-boxes, and the like; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view showing a box with my fastener applied. Fig. II is an enlarged detail sectional view of the box, showing the fastener in edge View. Fig. III is a top or plan view of the fastener. Fig. IV is an inside view. Fig. V is a top view of the lid member of the fastener. Fig. VI is a vertical section, and Fig. VII is an outside view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a box, and 2 its lid, to which my fastener may be applied. The lid member of the fastener consists of a plate 3, (see Fig. V,) having a raised middle portion 4, the depressed portions on each side of the middle portion being perforated to receive nails or screws 5, by which the plate is attached to the box cover or lid. Fitting beneath the raised portion 4 of the plate is a spring 6, having a substantially straight arm 7, a return-bend 8, and an arm 9, the end 10 of which fits in a perforation in the raised part of the plate and acts as a pivot upon which the spring Works. The straight side 7 of the spring lies against the front vertical wall of the raised portion 4 of the plate, as shown at 11, Fig. V, and tends to hold the spring in the position shown in full lines, Fig. V, and by pressing on the bend 8 of the spring it my be forced into the position shown in dotted lines.
The plate 3 has an opening 12 to receive the arrow-head of the box member of the fastener, and the inner side of this opening is traversed bythe straight arm 7 of the spring 6 When the spring is in its normal position.
The box member of the fastener consists of an arrow or V shaped head 13, from which depends an arm 14, secured to the inside of the box at 15. The lid of the box has an opening 16 beneath the plate 3, and when the lid of the box is closed the head of the box member of the fastener enters through the opening 16 of the lid and through the opening 12 of the plate 3 and forces the spring 6 toward the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. V, and when the lid is entirely closed the spring resumes its position shown in full lines, Fig. V, causing the head of the box member of the fastener to be engaged by the sp1-ing, as shown clearly in Figs. III and IV. To release the lid, pressure is applied to the exposed end 8 of the spring and the spring forced in the direction shown by the dotted lines, Fig. V, until the spring is disengaged from the head l5 of the box member, when the lid may be raised.
The head of the box member is formed with an opening 17, and the lid member of the fastener is provided with a perforated ear 18 to receive a seal 19.
I claim as my invention- 1. A box-fastener, composed of a'box member and a lid member, the box member consisting of an arm secured to the box and having a head, and the lid member consisting of a plate having a raised portionand an opening through which the head passes; and a spring pivoted at one lend to the plate and normallyin engagement with the head of the box member, and means carried by the spring whereby it may be moved out of engagement with the head, substantially as shown and described.
2. A box-fastenerconsisting of a plate 3 having a raised middle portion 4 and adapted to be secured to the lid of the box, a spring having a substantially straight arm 7, a return-bend 8, and an arm 9, said spring fitting beneath the raised portion of the plate and its arm 9 being connected to the raised portion of the plate, and a box member having a head 13, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
C. W. BEEHLER. In presence of-- N. FINLEY, STANLEY STONER.
