SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,698, dated March 30, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Ornlnnns W. BEEHLER,

of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missour1, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descript1on, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificatlon, and in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective View showng one end of a box or egg-case with my improved fastener applied, the lid being removed from the body of the box. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lid in place and the fastener turned to hold the lid on. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a detail section of part of the body of the box, and showing the lower end of the fastener.

My invention relates to an improved boxfastener, intended more particularly for eggcases; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the box or case, and B represents a cleat secured thereto.

0 represents part of the top or cover, and D a cleat secured thereto.

E represents the fastener, consisting of a rod or wire that passes up through an opening made in the cleat B. Its upper end is bent at (approximately) a right angle to form an arm, F, and its lower end is similarly bent in the same direction to form an arm, G. It is connected to the body of the box, above the cleat B, by means of a guide and supportingstaple, H.

I represents a slot or opening made in the cleat D, which has a lateral enlargement, J, extending in both directions, thereby forming a T-shaped mortise, and consequently lugs K on each side of the opening or slot I, over which the angle-arm F of the fastener fits to hold the lid in place, as shown in Fig. 2.

The fastening is turned by means of its lower angle-arm, G, which, when the lid is fastened on, fits beneath the cleat B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.

The lower angle-arm, G, has a bend at M, as shown most. plainly in Fig. 4, so that when it is turned in the position shown in full lines, Fig. 4, a persons fingers can get be hind it at N, to pull it around and unfasten the lid. \Vhen it is turned in the other di- 5 rection, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4, a persons fingers can get behind it, as shown at O, and turn it around to unfasten the lid.

In the former case the extreme end of the fastener comes against the body of the box, and in the latter case the bend M comes against the body of the box, and in either case it can be taken hold of with ease to turn it around to unfasten the lid.

By forming both angle-arms F and G upon the same side of the rod E either one of the lugs K may be engaged for holding the lid to place, which is quite convenient should one become broken; and by forming a single bend in the lower angle-arm, G, finger-room is pro- Vided,in whichever position said arm may be.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the two members of a box-i. 6., the body and the 1id,of a cleat having a T-shaped mortise formed there- 7 5 in, secured to one of said members, a wire or rod having at each end an angle-arm, both projecting in the same direction, and a second cleat secured to the other member of the box, through which said wire or rod passes, as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a box-fastener, the combination of the cleat D, having the T-shaped mortise I J formed therein, the wire or rod E, having at one end the angle-arm F and at the other the bent angle arm G, and the cleat B, through which said rod passes, as set forth.

3. The combination, with the cleat D, having the slot I J and lug K, of the rod E, having the angle-arm F at top and the angle-arm 0 G at bottom, the cleat B, through which said rod passes, and the staple H, for holding the arm F elevated in the plane of the lateral portion J of the slot, as set forth.
