Description

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN KENNEDY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVE M ENT IN PLOWS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN KENNEDY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the plow with one of the mold-boards removed to show the interior of the plow. Fig. 2 is a top view of the plow. Fig. 3 is a section through the front standard, sole, and point of the plow 5 and Figs. 4c and 5 are detached views of the lower part of the plow-handle and a part of the sole, showing the method of fastening the lower part of the plow-handle to the sole.
My invention relates to a peculiar method of attaching the handles and beam to the plow, and also to a method of adjusting the moldboard in such a manner that the plow will out either a wide furrow or an extremely narrow one, or drill, as desired by the operator.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the sole, and B B are the standards. These parts are cast together in one piece. by which greater strength and cheapness are attained and liability to break at the junctions of the standards with the sole is in a great degree prevented.
M M are the mold-boards, hinged to the standard B by means of a rod, 1t, entering eyes in the mold-boards and corresponding eyes in the standard B.
m m are pieces hinged to the mold-boards at s, and pass through an opening in the piece d, the latter being attached to the standard B by entering a slot in the same. A set-screw passes through a hole in the front part of the piece (I, which can be brought to bear against the surfaces of the pieces or plates m m, thereby'adjusting the mold-boards to any angle, so that a narrow or wide furrow may be readily out by the plow.
I am aware that the mold-boards of plows have been made adjustable in order to cut a wide or narrow furrow butIam not aware that the mold-boards have been hinged, as in my in-' vention, to the front standard for that purpose. By thus hinging the mold-boards I am en abled to out a wide furrow, and am also enabled,
by closing the mold-boards to their full extent, to cut a very narrow furrow or drill, which cannot be done with the plows referred to. The mold-boards also, in the cases alluded to, are flared at the bottom, whereas mine are turned in at the bottom and made to hug closely the side of the sole. By this arrangement of parts I amenabled to cut a very narrow furrow or drill.
The handle is attached to the frame as follows: At one end of the handle 0 there is a wedge-shaped opening, 19, (see Figs. 1 and 5,) which fits upon a correspondingly-formed pin, 0, attached to the sole A. The wedge-shaped pin 0 and opening 19 in the end of the handle are so formed that the pin 0 will not enter the hole 19 excepting when the handle is in an ele- I vated position, and when the handle occupies the position shown in Fig. lit is firmly locked to the sole to. Bolt 6 passes through holes in the handles and corresponding holes made in the standards B. The inner extremity of the beam D is made in a hooked form, as shown in Fig. 1. This hook passes over a bolt, a, which is placed across a slot in the standard B. The hook is held securely in its place by the key h,
passing through the beams and holes in projections on the standard B.
By this simple method of connecting the handles and beam with the frame A B B of the plow it will readily be seen that when a handle or the beam is broken it can be easily replaced. The whole plow, too, can be taken apart, as oan'be seen from its construction, without-the use of wrenches and loss of time.
P is a steel point attached to the standard B by the key It, and to the sole in any convenient manner.
Having thus fully described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The handle 0, having the Wedgeshaped opening 19 at its lower extremity, in combination with the pin 0, sole A, standard B, and bolt'e, for attaching the handle to the plow, substantially as described. 7
2. The hooked beam D, in combination with the standards B B and bolts a and h, for attaching the beam to the plow, substantially as described.
3. The hinged mold-boards M M, constructed with their surfaces turned in at the bottom, as described, and hinged to front standard, B, in combination with the hinged plates or pieces on m and piece d, for adjusting the mold-boards to any angle, the whole beingponstrueted and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
MARTIN KENNEDY.
