IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC FASTENINGS FOR PLOW-BEAMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,918, dated April 10, 1:66.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEwIs GIBBS, of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Fastenings for Uniting the Beams and Handles of Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a portion of a plowbeam and handle united by one of the fastenings or clasps in question. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 represents a section taken through the red line or a; of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 represents, in perspective, the metallic fastening detached from the beam and handle.

Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate figures. denote like parts in all the drawings.

1 am aware that a metal plate has been set in thejoint between the beam and handle of a plow for the purpose of skewing or adjusting the beam, but (lid not serve as a permanent fastening; and I am also aware that a metal plate has been extended over the joint between the beam and handle to strengthen the joint; but I am not aware that a metallic clasp, socket, or fastening such as I propose has eger been heretofore used for making a firm and substantial fastening for both the beam and handle.

My invention consists in a flanged plate, clasp, or socket for receiving and holding both the beam and handle, and' uniting the two firmly together and to the plate by screws, bolts, keys, or their equivalents, by which they are cheaply and easily placed in position.

-To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe the same by reference to the drawings.

A represents a plow-beam, and B a plowhandle of any of the known kinds; and O represents [a metallic flanged plate clasping both the beam and the handle, and by means of the screw-bolts a b, or their equivalents, uniting them firmly together.

The plate or clasp O has top and bottom lugs, d e, which lie againstthe top and bottom of the beam A; and the bolta passes through said lugs and through the beam, firmly uniting one to the other. There are also side fiauges,ff, on the plate or clasp for holding the beam laterally, making, as it were, with thellugs d e, a shallow socket or recess for receivin g and holding the end of the beam. On the opposite side of the plate there areflanges g, similar to thosef, which form a recess for the handle B to lie in, and the screw b passes through said handle, and is screwed into the plate O, which firmly unites the handle to the plate. Thus by this plate, which may be cast, and two screw-bolts, a very firm connection between the beam and handle of the plow is made without cutting away the wood, as in making a mortise and tenon.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimitherein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- -A metallic fastening for uniting a plowbeam and handle, made with lugs, flanges, and recesses. and united thereto in the manner'aud for the purposejherein' described'fand represented.
