0. SIMONS.
HAND PLANTER. No. 551,006. Patented Dem 10,1895.
UNITED .7 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLE SIMONS, OF ARKDALE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OLE REIERSEN, OF SAME PLACE.
HAND-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,006, dated December 10, 1895.
Application filed .Iuly 3, 1895. Serial No. 554,852. (No model.)
T0 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLE SIMONS, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Arkdale, in the county of Adams and State of l/Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Hand-Planter of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hand-planters.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of hand-planters and to provide one which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and which will be particularly adapted for planting potatoes and which will enable them to be accurately placed in the ground. 7
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a hand-planter which may be conveniently operated by a person while walking and which will require only onehand tomanipulate it and thereby avoid the operator assuming an awkward and tiresome position while planting. 1
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand-planter constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
Like numerals of reference incicate corre sponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
1 designates a bar or standard provided at its upper end with a handle 2 and having secured to it a delivery-chute 3, into which is designed to be dropped seed -potatoes and which is adapted to deliver the same into a pair of planting-jaws 4 and 5. The chute 3 is tubular and may be constructed of sheet metal or any other suitable material, the latter being preferably attached to the opposite edges of thestandard 1.
The jaw 4 is rigid and is provided with a shank 6, which is secured to the lower end of the standard 1. The jaw 5 is hinged at its top to the jaw 4:, and both jaws are provided with tapering substantially triangular side flanges and form a receptacle which tapers to the lower terminus of the jaws. The jaws are adapted to be readily inserted in the soil, and after such insertion they are open to deposit a potato by means hereinafter described. The hinged jaw has secured to its top a metal frame 7, consisting of a continuous strip of metal, which is doubled at its center into the form of an elliptical loop to provide a forwardly-projecting arm 8, which extends from the top of the hinged jaw. The terminals of the strip of metal are extended in rear of the jaws to provide converging arms 9, which are connected by a rod 10 with a spring 11 of the standard. The forwardly-projecting arm 8 limits the penetration of the jaws and is adapted to rest upon the surface of the ground, and the operator by swinging the planter forward opens the jaws and deposits the potato, the arm 8 forming a fulcrum to permit such operation to take place.
The rearwardly-converging arms 9 are connected by a fastening device and are slightly separated to receive a hook 12 of the lower portion of the rod 10, the lower end of the latter being bent to form the hook 12. The spring 11 is housed in a tubular casing 13 and is disposed on the upper portion of the rod 10, the latter passing througha perforation 14 of the lower end of the casing. The upper end of the casing is open to facilitate the assembling of the parts.
It will be seen that the hand-planter is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construc tion, that it is readily manipulated, and that .by it potatoes may be accurately planted with great rapidity.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is-= In a hand planter, the combination of a standard, a delivery chute mounted on the same, the rigid and hinged jaws located at the lower end of the standard and forming a tapering receptacle having its enlarged portion or mouth arranged at the lower end of the chute, the forwardly and rearwardly extending arms fixed to the hinged door, and disposed substantially horizontally, the rear wardly extending" arms projecting from op- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as posite sides of the hinged jaw and converging my own I have hereto affixed my signature in in rear of the standard, and a spiral spring the presence of two Witnesses. mounted on the back of the standard and 0011- neeted with the outer terminals of the rear- \Vitnesses: wardly extending arms and adapted to close F. MCCONICK, the jaws substantially as described. (1. M. SIMONS.
