Be it known I, WILLrAM HENRY SLAPPEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and nseiul Improvernent in Planters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in planters7 the objects being to provide a simplyconst-ructed'and effective machin 3 of the kind, and one that will not catch against brush or other obstructions, and can be easily handled, and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the machine, consisting of a single piece of plate metal doubled on itself, as at at', then extending backward and bent outward at right angles, as at c', and then eX- tended backward, forming the parallel side plates a d.
B is a clevis inserted into the front end of said frame and rendered vertically adjustable by means of the vertical series of openings b in the clevis and the pin b', passing through an opening in the frame and engaging any one of said adj usting-openings.
C is the furrow-opener, consisting of the blade or share E and the vertical tapped shank c, which enters and projects above the bearing D, made by bending the plates a ont- 'ward at opposite points, and which is rendered vertically adjustable in said bearing by the nuts d d, respectively above and below said plates c.
The share E is triangular in cross section and tapers downward from its circumferential shoulder e, that separates it from the shank c. The edge e curves downward and rearward from said shoulder toits point e2 to facilitate motion through the soil when the latter is cured at opposite points to the outer sides of the plat-es c and their central parts secured by bolts to the seed-box at its rear upper portion. The rear edge ofthe seed-box is braced by the metal plates ff, the lower ends of which are bolted to the innersides of the plates a., while their upper ends are secured to the .seed-boX bythe bolts that connect the handles thereto.
G is thecvening and covering board having p the sharp lower edge, which is also concave laterally tomove the soil centrally as it covers, and with its inclination downward and l'rontward. The said board is detachably secured to the shares II I-I by means of the bracerods h 7L, which hook at their front ends into openings h/ h in the side plates, c, and have their tapped rear ends passing through suitable openings in the boards and the upper parts of the blades of the shares, nuts h2 if be ing on said tapped portions, respectively, in front of the coverer-board and behind the shares, so that the inclination of the cover-erboard can be adjusted to a slight extent by said nuts. The shanks of the said shares ride on the transverse upper and lower bolts I I, that connect the rear ends of the plates o, having their heads on the outside ot' one of said plates and the nuts i on the outside of the other plate. The said bolts are tapped at both ends, pass through openings in thesaid shanks, and have nuts i', one each side of the shanks in order that the shares I-I can be adjusted, toward each other.
The shares may be reversed, and the covercr and evener board may have its inclination reversed by attaching thel shares in a reversed position to the bolt i2, passing through the seedbox near its lower end, and to the bolt I, rcn moved to the openings i" in the plates c.

having the rounded periphery j, and with its eye in the squared metallic Center piece, j', set transversely in the wheel. The wheel turns on the shaft j?, which has its ends secured in the side plates, a., a suitable distance in front of the seed-box.
On one side of the wheel is secured the eocentricdisk K, flanged around its outer edge and surrounded by the eccentric-ring k, to which is secured in the usual manner the front end of the pitman k. The pitinan passes through a vertical slot, k2, in the front ol` the seed-box and has its upper rear end pivoted to the end of an arm, Z, standingupward from the oscillating shaft L,journaled in the sides of the seedlbox. rlhe shaft L has the upwardly-inclined diverging, stirring, and dispersing arms M rising from its upper surface and the seetor'plate N depending from its lower surface and set longitudinally edgewise.

so as to force them together when the screws are moved inward, thus adjusting the width of the escape-opening l. The fingers u being united at their bases will withstand great breaking strain.
For heavy and rough usage the edge of the furrow-opener is put infront, and the inclination of the coverer is reversed or inclined downward and rearward.
Having described myinvention, I claim- The'eombination of the main frame having the side plates, a (t, provided with openings h near their rear ends, the transverse bolts I, inserted through the rearends of the side plates and threaded at both ends, the shares H, having theirshanks hung on said bolts I, the cover secu red to said shares, the adjusting and seeur-` ing nuts mounted on both ends of the bolt I and bearing against both sides of each share, and the rods h, having theirlower ends adjustably secured to the eeverer and their upperends engaging the openings h', as specified.
