WASHING MACHINE.
@wth/Lewes WILLIAM ALLENSVORTI-I AND MILTON H. VIRDEN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO ASSIGNORS TO LOUIE M. VIRDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,575, dated December 3,1895. Application Elea October 18, 1894.. Semi No. 526,280. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM ALLENs- WORTH and MILTON H. VIRDEN, of Columbus, iu the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washingdvlachines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improved washing-machine 5 and the object of the same is to provide a machine with oppositely simultaneouslymovable coacting pounding or rubbing surfaces, which will cause the clothes to be quickly and thoroughly cleansed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and durable rubbing-surface- The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the machine with the operating-handle depressed. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional View, the operating mechanism being shown in the position when the handle is raised. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a corner of the tub, showing the hanger-connection.
A designates the tub suitably supported and provided, preferably, with a curved bottom. Upon opposite sides of the tub are the bearing-slots B, into which extend the ends of central shaft O. Upon this shaft are mounted the cross-bars D, which latter are connected at their ends by rounds F. Depending from these cross-bars and arranged concentrically with shaft C is the agitator Gr. This agitator consists of a series of transverse strips or slats secured to or strung upon the wirerods II, which at their ends are hooked at H to engage the rounds F, and as the-end strips of the series extend up beneath cross-arms D it will be seen that the said hooked rods or wires securely clamp the curved rubber in its proper position. Also mounted between their ends on shaft O are the arms J, which beneath the said shaft are connected by the perforated agitator K, which is adapted to move in and concentric with the rubber, the samel being arranged in close proximity to each other, as shown. The upper or extended ends of the arms .I and the bars D are connected by links 5 5 L, the latter being joined by pivots L. From these pivots extend the arms M to the clips N, to which they are pivotally secured, the said clips being adapted to engage in notches in the sides of the tub and there held by the latches O, pivotally supported to swing thereover. Extended upward and outward from bars or arms D is the handle P for furnishing impetus to the rubber.
In operation it will be seen that as the handle is depressed and the curved rubber moved downward upon that side and upward upon its opposite side the linkconnection will give to the agitator an opposite movement, and vice versa, so that the clothes placed within the rubber will be thoroughly and effectually manipulated for the cleansing operation. The strips being removably secured to one side of the tub renders it very easy to remove the whole washing mechanism for the purpose of gaining access to the tub. The construction of the curved rubber is such as to give it strength and durability, while its formation is simple and inexpensive.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ishm The washing machine shown and described composed of the tub, the shaft O, journaled therein, cross bars D mounted on said shaft and carrying the rubber, a handle for the rubber, the arms J extending above and below said shaft and mounted to swing thereon and within the rubber aprovided with agitator K, the pivotally joined links L, pivotally joining the upper ends of arms J and bars D, clips N, detachably secured to the sides of the tub, arms M from said clips to the pivots connect ing arms L, arranged and combined to operate as described.
In testimony whereof we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
