UNITED STATES ERNEST II. F. SCHNEIDER, OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHlNG-MACH INES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. "35,429, dated July 13, 1875; application filed J annary 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ennnstr H. F. SCHNEI- DER, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing- Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art'to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved washing-machine; and Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
This invention has for its object to furnish a simple, convenient, and effective machine, by means of which the clothes may be quickly and thoroughly washed; and consists in the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A represents a tub or box of rectangular form, supported upon legs a, of such a length 'as to raise the machine to a sufficient height. B is the reciprocating box, in which the clothes are placed to be washed, and is kept in position and guided as it slides back and forth by the vertical bars b, between which passes the slats a, forming the bottom of the box B. These bars I) are secured to a cross-piece, d, equidistant from the ends of the tub A, forming a corrugated and stationary partition, against which the clothes are brought by the backward and forward This box B has secured at each end vertical bars 6, the edges of the inner sides being beveled to prei'ent the cutting or otherwise injuring the clothes. The bottom of the box is composed of slats a, secured lengthwise upon the under side of the ends thereof, a suitable distance apart to allow the water to pass in and out freely, and to allow the slats to slide between the vertical bars I) of the stationary partition.
Secured at the ends of the tub A, and at a suitable distance from the bottom, are bevelcleats ff, which operate, in connection with elongated openings 9 g in the ends of the reciprocating box B, to force the water through the openings into the same as the box is brought up against the end of the tub A, the
current of water turning the clothes, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
To the upper part of the forward end of the reciprocating box B is secured the end of a I operating the machine.
In using my machine, the clothes to be washed are placed in the reciprocating box B in equal quantities upon each side of the stationary partition of the tub A; and then, by operating the hand-lever D, the box B will be caused to move back and forth through the water or suds in the tub, the clothes at one end of the box receiving pressure between the vertical bars 6 and the bars bvOf the stationary partition, while at the other end the clothes Will partly turn and admit water to pass through them. This is caused by the bevel-cleats f f, in connection with the clon gated openings in the ends of the reciprocating box B, which may be explained as follows: As the end of the box B comes in contact with the end of the tub A, water will rise therein, the bevel-cleat f checking the upward course of the water, and forcing the same through the elongated opening 9 in the end of the box B upon the clothes, which tends to turn and open them to receive afresh supply of water. i
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the reciprocating box B, having open slat bottom 0, and at its ends vertical bars 0 and elongated opening 9 g of the tubA, provided with the stationary partition composed of vertical bars I), and having at its ends bevel-cleats f f, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention, I aftlx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST H. F. SCHNEIDER.
