SPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,877', dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed July ll, 1895. Serial No. 565,642, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. BEERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Packages, of which the following is specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to handles for packages, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device of this class which can readily be attached to a string or cord with which the package is bound; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specidcation, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in Which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved handle applied to a package, and Fig. 2 a plan View of a blank from which the handle is formed.
In the practice of my invention I stamp from any suitable material, preferably paperboard of any desired kind, a blank A, provided with ends or head-pieces B, adapted to be bent or folded at right angles to the main part or body of the handle on the dotted lines C. The ends or heads B are each provided on each side with notches or recesses D, and extending inwardly from said notches or recesses on one side are slots E, which extend, preferably, more than half-way across and are turned backward and outward, as shown at F, and terminate in small round apertures or holes G at about the center of the end portion of the heads B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The handle is applied to apackage, as shown in Fig. l, by inserting the string or cord with which the package is bound through the slots E and F and into the holes or openings G, and in this position the device constitutes a convenient handle for the package, as will be readily seen.
It is evident that the blank A need not be of the exact form shown and described. The notches or recesses D may be omitted if preferred and the slots G and F may be of any desired form, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A handle for packages, comprising a body portion, end portions bent at right angles thereto, said end portions being provided on one side with notches or recesses, and with slots formed in said notches or recesses which extend into said end portions, and are directed backwardly and outwardly and terminate in small openings or apertures, substantially as shown and described.
2. A handle for packages consisting of a blank stamped out of a single sheet of material and having end pieces B adapt-ed to be bent or folded at right angles to the body of the handle, said end pieces peing provided with recesses D and slots E extending inwardly therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 9th day of July,
ALEXANDER W. BEERS. IVitnesses:
L. M. MULLER, E. VAN DEUnsEN.
