UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. SOOTD AND DENNIS W. GRANGER, OF FRANKLIN, N. Y., ASSIGN- ORS TO THEMSELVES AND ANDREW J. DIBBLE, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,58 i dated April 27, 1875; application tiled December 12, 1874.
To all whom Iit may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY R. SCOTT and DENNIS W. GRANGER, of Franklin, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter-Package, of which the following is a specilication Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved butter-package, taken through the line a: .r x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, part being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved butter-package, simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and convenient and durable in use, being capable ot' being sent to the consumer and returned to the producer an indenite number of times.
The invention will lirst -be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A is the body otl the package, which is made rectangular in its general form, and with slightly-flaring sides and ends. The body A of the package is strengthened by metallic bands or hoops B. O is the cover, the lower sides of the edges of which are rabbeted to lit into the mouth ot' the body or box A. To the ends of the box A, near their upper edges, are attached metallic bars D, the middle parts ot' which are thickened and recessed upon their lower sides, to serve as handles for convenience in handling the package. To the ends of the box A, at or near the ends of the handle-bars D, are attached short upright bars E, which may be made solid with or separate from the said handle-bars D, as may be desired. The ends ot' the upright bars E project upward at one end ot' the box A, so as to be flush with the bars F, attached to the cover C, and at the other end to rest against the lower side of the ends of said bars F. In the inner side of the upper ends of the bars E, at one end of the box A, are formed holes or mortises to receive tenons formed upon the ends of the bars F, as shown in Fig. l,
and dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bars E, at the other end ot' the box A,are recessed upon their inner sides to receive the spring-catches` G, the hooks or shoulders of whichentcr holes in the edge of the cover C, and thus lock the cover in place upon the box A. 1n the catch holes or recesses :in the cover C are placed small sliding bolts H, which, when pushed outward, push the catches G outward, and thus release the cover C. The bolts H may be pushed outward by means of a nail or other sharp -pointed instrument inserted through short slots in the bars F. The end of the cover O is raised from the catches G when said catches have been pushed back by rubber blocks l, inserted in holes in the edge of the box A, and upon which the said cover O rests. rihe upper ends ot' the springcatohes Gr are beveled oft, so that they may be pushed back by the operation of pressing the cover O down into place.
XVe are aware that the cover of a buttertub has been secured by means ot' hooks on the tub, having overhangiug ends, beneath which the cover is slipped laterally, a springlatch on the cover locking the saine in position.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the recessed bars E and spring-catches Gr with the box A, recessed cover C, and bars F, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the sliding bolts H with the spring-catches G, the recessed cover O, and the bars F, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the rubber blocks I with the edge ot' the box A, and with the recessed cover C, the spring-catches Gr, and the sliding bolts H, substantially as here-in described.
HENRY R. SCOTT. DENNIS W. GRANGER. Witnesses:
WM. B. HANEOED, STEPHEN HINE.
