Description

G. R. SHEPARDSUN.
Machines for Bundling Laths.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE R. SHEPARDSON, OF LA GROSSE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BUNDLING LATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 51,924, dated June 9, 1874; application filed May 13, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, G. R. SHEPARDSON, of La Crosse, in the count-y of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Bundling Laths; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a jack for bundling laths, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view ot my machine. Fig. 2 is a section of the same through the line a' m, Fig. l.
A represents the base or bed piece of my machine, upon which are secured two upright parallel standards, B B, connected bya stayrod, a, and provided on the rear side with a projecting arm, and these arms connected by a rod, b. On the inner side, at the upper end of each standard B, are pivoted two semicircular jaws, C C, each of 'which is provided with an arm, D.` At the lower end of' each arm D is pivoted a lever, E, and the ends of these levers are connected by a rod, d, passing through, the ends of said rod passing through vertical slots e in the standards B B The rod d also passes through slots z' z' in the arms of a treadle, G, which are pivoted to the rod b at the back of the standard. The treadle G is provided with a handle, h, by means of which the treadle is raised. This throws the connected ends of the levers E E upward, drawing the lower ends of the arms D D inward, and opening the jaws O C. The laths are then put in said jaws, when the treadle is pressed downward, closing the jaws which form the bundle. The bundle is then tied, the jaws opened again, the bundle taken out, and another lot of laths placed in the jaws.
The movement ofthe arms D D to open the jaws is limited by means of adjustable stops ff, attached at the foot, on the inner sides of the standards B B.
Having thus fulljT described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pivoted jaws O C, provided with the arms D D, in combination with the levers E E, rod d, treadle G, standards B B, having' slots e c, and adjustable stops f f, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth'.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
