CARPET-SWEEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,827, dated' February 18, 1896. Applicatin led October 14, 1895, Serial No. 565,542. (No model.)

To all whom V`t may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALLEN B. vLINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Sweepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 1o to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in carpet-sweepers, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and

particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end elevation of a device emzo bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the same with the casein section on the lines 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Eig. 3 a side elevation of one end.

A is a case of any desired form; B, a brush, having pulleys B adapted to be engaged by the driving and supporting wheels C, said brush being journaled on the studs B", se-

3o cured to the guard-bars E, and said wheels journaled on the pins D, which pins are secured to spring-arms E. Said guard-bars are secured near their ends to the sides of the case A, and bending at right angles near the 3 5 corners of said case extend beyond the ends of the same?? outside the wheels O. Said springarms E are formed of portions of said guardbars, which bars are divided longitudinally from points near their places of fastening to 4o said case to points beyond the journals of said wheels and thence downward, separating said lower divided portions from the remaining portions of said bars and forming flexible arms E', which arms are bent at right angles near the corners of said case and are also bent downward from said angles, thus allowing the ends of said arms to spring longitudinally by the action of the portions beyond said angles, and to spring vertically by 5o torsion of the same. Guide-plates F are secured to the inner sides of said arms E near their ends and extending' upward engage the guard bars and prevent said arms from springing outward. The wheels C being journaled on the pins D, which are rigidly secured to the outer ends of the arms E, said .wheels are held toward and in contact with said pulley B by the spring action of said arms, and as said case is supported by said wheels any pressure on said case will cause 6o said arms to spring and allow said case to move toward the floor, lowering said brush.

I thus secure avery simple and cheap construction, whereby the brush may be raised and lowered by pressure on the case and the driving-wheels held in Contact with the brushpulley.

Vhat I claim is- 1. In a carpet-sweeper, in combination with the case, guard-bars divided longitudinally 7o throughout part of their lengths and having the lower of said divisions detached at one end and bent downward, forming arms, driving and supporting wheels journaled on pins attached to said arms and a brush engaged by said wheels, substantially as described.

2. In a carpet-sweeper, in combination with a case, guard-bars secured near their ends to the sides of said case, a brush journaled on studs attached to said bars, and driving and 8o supporting wheels journaled on spring-arms having right-angle bends and formed of portions of said guard-bars, whereby said wheels are held in contact with said brush, and said case and brush are lowered by pressure, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a casing, a brush, driving and supporting wheels, and guardbars, flexible arms cut from the lower edges of said bars and extending from near the ends 9o of the same to points intermediate their angles, guide-plates on said arms, pins secured to said arms and forming journals for said wheels and studs on said guard-bars forming journals for said brush, substantially as described.
