UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. GOULD, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
CARPET-BINDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,130, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed April 25, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. GOULD, of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Matting Ends, of which the following is a specificanon.
This invention has reference to an improved matting end, by which a better tread is obtained, and by which the same is less liable to be broken in shaking the matting for cleaning; and the invention consists ofa matting end having backwardly-bent end flanges and an elastic treading or covering plate retained by said flanges.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of a piece of matting with my' improved matting ends, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the matting end on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the body of my improved matting end, which body is bent of sheet metal into U shape, and provided with backwardly-bent and overlapping flanges a a at the ends, that serve to retain a treading or covering plate, B, which extends (No model.)
over the outer surface of the body A. The treading or covering plate Bis made of a suitable elastic material, such as rubber, linoleum, or other fabric, and is ribbed, so as to give a better support to the foot,;and also greater elasticity to the matting end, so as to prevent the breaking of the same when handling the matting in cleaning the same.
In making my improved matting end the sheet-metal body can be made of light stock, as the treading or covering plate to some extent re-enforces the same and imparts a certain degree of flexibility thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I
