P. LAWS.
' TOOTH BRUSH.
1 To. 54=3,0Z8. Patented July 23, 1895.
if :iIQfifiiiiii i ifim f iii fwl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK LAWS, on TAMA, IOWA.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
srnornrcncrron forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,028, dated July 23, 1895.
I Application filed October 16. 1894:. Serial No. 526 027. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK LAWS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tama, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to toilet articles, and more particularly to tooth-brushes.
The invention has for its object to provide novel and inexpensive means whereby a tooth-brush may be protected when carried in the pocket, and furthermore to so construct the same that receptacles may be attached thereto which will admit articles, such as tooth-powdensoap, and the like, a still further object being that the receptacles may be readily removed; furthermore, that the attachment itself may be easily removed,if desired, and applied to any tooth-brush, irrespective of the size of the handle.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the attachment that sharp corners will be avoided, all angles being slightly rounded or beveled.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals denote similar parts in the several views, in which- Figure lis a View in side elevation, showing' the brush applied with the protector closed over it and in dotted lines their relative positions when partly open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same open, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the clamp.
In the drawings, I represents a shield or guard adapted to fit over the brush proper, said shield having an extension hinged at 2 to the flanges of the clamp 3, said clamp consisting of spring arms which encircle the handle 5 of the tooth-brush. Secured on the body 4e of the clamp 3 are flanges 6 provided -When the tooth -brush is to be used, the
shield or guard is removed from the bristles of the brush by overturning the shield, which the hinge will readily permit. Thereafter the soap or powder may be removed, if desired, and both articles may be readily replaced, as will be apparent.
My improved attachment may be made of any suitable material, light metal being preferred, as the cost of manufacture will be slight, by stamping them out of metal.
It will be noted that when all the parts are in position the attachment and brush combined will take but little more space in the pocket than a tooth-brush, and at the same time the protection to the bristles is effected and a convenience heretofore explained results.
, It will be apparent that various changes may bemade in the details of constructing my attachment without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment for tooth brushes, consisting of a shield or guard and a clamp hinged to said guard, adapted to receive the handle of a tooth brush, substantially as described.
2. An attachment for tooth brushes, consisting of a clamp, a shield hinged to said clamp, and receptacles on the clamp and shield for toilet articles, for the purpose described. 1
3. An attachment for tooth brushes, consisting of a clamp having a flange, the shield hinged to said flange, adapted to fit over the bristles of the tooth brush, and means for securingthe shield over the brush, substantially as described.
4:- An attachment for tooth brushes, consisting of a shield, spring catches on the shield to receive and hold the receptacle containing soap or the like, a clamp having In testimony whereof I aifix my signature spring arms to receive the handle of the tooth in presence of two witnesses. brush and provided with flanges to which the shield is hinged, a receptacle adapted to con- FRANK LAWS 5 tain tooth powder and means on the shield Witnesses:
