Description

(No Model.) J, OHIVILL. DOOR FASTENER- No. 540,423. Patented June 4, 1895.
nrniv'r Futon.
JOHN CHIVILL, OF CHICAGO, ILLIbTOIS:
DOOR-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,423, dated June 4, 1895.
' Application filed February 25, 1895. Serial No. 539,698- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN OHIVILL, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact deresponding to that used in connection with the ordinary look, while at the same time it may be readily adapted to doors with varying kinds or without molding upon the door postythe mainpurpose of my invention being to provide a detachable and portable door fastener adaptedto the use of travelers and others who desire to secure a door from within so that it cannot be unlocked from without, or the fastening thereof removed except by one upon that side of the door upon which the fastener'is placed; all of which is hereinafter more particularly described and definitely pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of my improved fastener; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of'a door and door-post, showing a plan view of my improved fastener as the same appears when in position to lock the door.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a Hat metallic strap or bar upon which is formed a screw threaded stem 1) which is integral with the strap. A thumb-nut c is formed upon the stem which nut is prevented from being removed by means of a shoulder or collar 01 formed uponor rigidly attached to the outer end of the stem. A detent-e is formed upon the strap a and adapted to fit into the mortise 5 f of the door-post g Fig. 2.
The stem 1) is loosely inserted in a slot h, Fig. 1, formed in an arm 7' bent as shown which is provided with a foot is, adapted to rest against the door Z intended to be fastened as indicated in Fig.- 2, while that portion of the arm in which the slot is formed, rests against the molding of the door-post in the manner shown in said Fig. 2. A washer n is adapted to rest in a suitable indentationin the arm, such, for example as that shown at 0 to prevent the arm from slipping under pressure.
Upon placing the parts in position and tightening the thumb-nut as shown in Fig. 2 the door Z is securely fastened and cannot be openedexcept by the party upon that side of the door upon which the fastening is placed.
The strap a, is bent, as shown, at its juncture with the stem in order to permit the door to be opened readily when the thumb nut is loosened.
- If desirable to leave the fastener in place 7 in hotels or elsewhere which might not otherwise be properly secured.
I am aware that door fasteners have heretofore been made having a screw threaded strap, a detent thereon adapted to fit in the mortise of the door post, a thumb nut and a crossbar. I am also aware of the construction shown in the patent to C. A. Orongeyer, No. 258,024, in which an adjustable leg is employed to fit the device to the variation in the molding of the door jamb; but I makeno claim to either of these constructions, but inasmuch as my device fully overcomes a difficulty not heretofore successfully surmounted which adapts it to doors having varying forms of molding or no molding at all upon the door post,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr The combination with the strap a having the screw threaded stem 19 and bent as shown at itsj unction therewith,of the detent adapted to engage the mortise of the door post, the
thumb nut, and the arm jbent as shown aid specification, in the presence of two subscribarin beinJ provided with a. foot 7c, slot 7L and ing witnesses, this 19th day of February,1895. indentation 0 constructed and arranged as described, whereby said arm may adapt it- 5 self to the variations in the form of the door post, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this JOHN CHIVILL.
Witnesses:
D. H. FLETCHER, W. H. CHAMBERLIN.
