PIANO ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,824, dated November 12, 1895.

13e it known that l, CARL J. SCHNEIDER, a

c itizen of the United States, residing at Americus, 1n the county of Sumter and State of Georsimilar keyboard by means of which the wristl and arm of the performer are supported in the proper position while the fingers are practicing upon the keys; and it consists in the novel devices hereinafter described and claimed.

My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanyingdrawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.

Figure l represents a perspective view of a portion of a piano, showing my improved attachment in position thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front lelevation of the attachment shown in Fig'. l detached from the piano. Fig. represents a plan view ot' parts shown in Fig. 2, part of the supporting-arm being cut away and the central sleeve of the bracket and part of the rod being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 4 represents a top plan view of the supporting-arm and socket shownin Fig. 2.

A is a scroll or frame having a socket AQ which sets over the upper end of a vertical standard C, and is held firmly thereon by means of a set-screw o3, which fits into a groove in said standard. The frame or bracket A is provided with an upper collar or sleeve c above its central portion and with concave rests a' a at its opposite ends.

B is a rod of wood, metal, or other material formed in two parts B and B2, spliced together within the central sleeve, as shown in Fig. 3, the screw a2 passing through the said thimble and the reduced adjacent ends of the rods. The outer ends of the rod B are supported in the concave rests ed. If desired, I may use a single rod in place of the one shown in the drawings, as will be obvious.

formed on the enlarged end d of a horizontal supporting-arm D, which latter extends under the front part of the piano, where it passes through a U -shaped bracket E, secured to the under side of the front of the piano.

The bracket E is shown as secured to the piano by the screws set at an angle, so as to bring the outer end of the arm D in the proper position in front of the piano; but it will be obvious that the bracket E might be fixed to a swivel-plate having a set-screw, so that the angle of the piece D could be varied at will. The arm D is held in the bracket E at the desired position by means of the clamp-screw ci.

The collar d, formed on the outer end of the arm D for the reception of the standard C, is provided with a clamp-screw (l2, which extends into a groove c inthe standard O, allowingthe said standard to be raised or lowered at will and clamped in the desired position.

As the rod B should at all times be parallel to the front of the keyboard of the piano, it will be seen that the set-screw d2, working in the vertical slot or groove c in the standard C, will prevent the bracket from being turned pivotally, but will keep it in the proper position.

My invention may bc made plain or any ornamental style desired, and it will be evident that it may be readily attached to or removed from the piano by means of the clamp-screw d, and that the standard O may be readily removed frein the collar d on the arm D, and the parts packed away when not in use. It will also be evident that my attachment may be readily attached to any piano without injuring the woodwork or del'acing the same.

It will be seen that many modifications of my invention might be made which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. In an arm rest for use in connection with the keyboard of a piano or other similar keyboard, for supporting the wrist and arm while practicing, the combination, with a horizontal rod 5 a bracket rigidly supporting said rod in a position slightly above but in front of and parallel to the said keyboard, and pro- IOO vided with a vertical socket in its lower central portion; an upright having its upper end Vfitting in said soeket, and held by asetserew; ot a horizontal arln provided at one end with a collar adapted to receive the lower end ot' said upright and allow of its vertical adj ustment therein; a elamp screw passing through said collar and adapted. to clamp said upright at any desired height; a cleat secured to the under side o t the said keyboard and adapted to reeeive the opposite end of the said horizontal arm and allow of its horizontal adjustment therein; and. a clamp screw passing through said eleatt'or clamping said horizontal arm in the desired position, substantially as described.
