-BURGLAR-ALARM.

To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, MICHAEL P. MURPHY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

' The want of a burglar-alarm which would be not only portable but simple in construction and cheap to manufacture has long been felt, those heretofore invented and patented being generally so complicated in their arrangement and operation as to seriously operate against their introduction and use to the desired degree.

To produce a burglar alarm which will possess portability, simplicity, and cheapness is therefore the object of the present invention, and is satisfactorily accomplished thereby, it consisting in a novel and simple arrangement of parts for actuating the alarm device or devices, as will be hereinafter particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view, showing a portion of the alarm-bell used broken away and vertical; Fig. 2, a central section taken through the alarm, showing the operating parts in elevation.

'A in the drawings represents a flat plate of metal having at or near one end upon its under side a sharp pung, a, by which the burglar-alarm, when to be used, is fastened to the floor of a room, as will be presently explained.

To the end 11 of the plate A is secured a upright shaft, B, on the upper end of which is secured an alarm-bell, O, made of a cup shape, with its open end downward; D, the hammer of the hell 0, arranged so as to strike it upon its under side or inner surface; E, the hammer-stem, secured at its end 0 tothe upright spindle d, turning at its lower end in the plate A, from which spindle (Z, and in the opposite direction to the hammer-stem E toward the pung end of the said plate A, extends an arm, G; H, a spring cu'rled about the spindle d, to which, at its inner end, it is secured, the other end being hung to the bellupright B; I, an upright catch, having at its upper end an angular arm, and turning upon a fulcrum or center pin, h, of a standard, J, of the piate A, which catch is so hung that its lower end, I, can be swung in and toward the alarm-bell c by depressing the outer end of its arm g.

To set the alarm arranged as herein above explained, the arm G of the stem-spindle d and lower end of the catch I are engaged with each other, as represented in Fig. 1, by moving each in the proper direction therefor, a handle, L, being provided for the stem-spindle, so as to conveniently move the arm G when the alarm is secured to the floor of the room in which it is to be used, or any other suitable place, according to the requirements of the case, by inserting its pung a in the floor, but so as to bring the outer end of the angular arm 9 of the catch I against the door through which a person in order to enter the room must pass, the door swinging inward, when, as is obvious, if the door is then opened it will strike against said arm 9 and thus swing the catch I so as to relieve it from the stein-spindle arm G, which thereby being set free allows the spring H to actuate and throw the hammer 1) against and strike the bell, sounding the same, which noise, if sufliciently loud, will immediately awaken and alarm the person sleeping in such room.

Fromthe above description of my improved burglar-alarm it is plainly manifestthat it can be made so as to be portable, and is, furthermore, simple and cheapin construction, all of ing the alarm to the room-floor may be varied. I

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the alarm O, fastening device A, and catch I, when arranged together so as to operate substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
