UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
GEORGE H. VERNON, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
STOCKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,322, dated March 26,1895.
Application filed February 19, 1894- Serial No. 500,653- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. VERNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stockings, and consists in the construction and arrangement of o the stocking, as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the two parts of the stocking united as it will appear when in use, and Figs. 2 and 3 perspective views of the two parts of the stocking, disconnected. Fig. 4 is aside elevation, and Fig. 5 isa front elevation, of the upper or leg portion, detached.
The stocking consists of two portions the foot portion A with the upper edge b adapted to enclasp the anklejust above the ankle joint, and a leg portion B having its lower edge formed with the angular cavities or recesses d d at the front and rear, and with the portions d d between the angular recesses and projecting down upon each side of the ankle joint, the front cavity d adapted to fit over the top of the foot just below the upper line of the top 6 of the foot portion A, and the rear cavity 01 adapted to enclasp the rear of the ankle joint above the heel and just belowthe upper edge 17 of the foot section, as shown in Fig. 1; The lower points of the angular portionsd d areunitedbyastraporbandBwhich passes underneath the foot portion across the instep, and thus securely holds the leg portion 13 in place.
The cavities d d and the intervening angular portions (1 d should be so formed as to cause the edges of the cavities to fit the ankle and foot closely, and without wrinkles, so that no inconvenience will be felt by the wearer, nor unequal or irregular surface be apparent.
5 Experiment has shown that the angular portions 61 d should be so formed that the strap D comes about one-third of the distance from the front to the rear of the ankle, to cause the lower edge of the leg portion B to snugly fit around the ankle and across the foot, and without wrinkles or irregularities of surface. I
If properly formed the two parts of the stocking fit the foot and ankle closely and without wrinkles or irregularity of surface. 5 5
The cavities d 01 will be formed with straight edges with a selvage along the edges, so that they will not curl up when stretched across or around the foot.
The straps D will preferably be knitted or otherwise formed in one piece with the leg portion B, but may be formed separately and attached to the leg portion in any suitable manner.
I claim many advantages for this stocking. 6
The feet of stockings always wear out first, and by forming the two parts separately, one pair of leg portions may be made to do duty for several pairs of foot sections, thus greatly reducing the expense, as the cost of the extra foot portions will be materially less than the leg portions.
With this form of construction a high priced leg portion may be worn with a cheaper priced foot portion, the leg portion being the only part which shows. Then again, the heavy woolen foot portion may be worn with a lighter weight leg portion, in cold weather, whereby the foot may be amply protected without the necessity for increasing the thickness of the leg portion.
Having thus described my invention, wha I claim as new is As a new article of manufacture a stocking formed of a leg section and a foot section, the 8:
lower edge of the leg section having projections on the sides connected by a strap adapted to embrace the foot beneath the instep, and'with recesses in the lower edge at the front and rear adapted to encompass the ankle above the joint, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE H. VERNON.
Witnesses:
G. N. WOODWARD, H. S. WEBSTER.
