Description

(No Model.) I
A. H. ALBERSHARDT. HOLDER FOR, UMBRBLLAS, &c.
- No. 523,953; Patented July 31, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST HENRY ALBERSHARDT, OF GRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA.
HOLDER FOR UMBRELLAS, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,953, dated July 31, 1894.
. Application filed December 4, 1898- Serial No. 492,797. (No model.)
portion 1 is cut away to form a rectangular To aZZwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUST HENRY ALBER- SHARDI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville,in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a. new and useful Holder for Umbrellas, Parasols, Canes, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers particularly to a metallic holder for umbrellas, parasols, canes, and similar articles adapted to be securely fixed to the frame of a valise, satchel, or grip for the purpose of holding and carrying the umbrella, parasol, cane, or like article without incurring an inconvenience to the owner and consists in the peculiar construction more specifically pointed out in the following description and claims. I have fully attained this object by the holder illustrated in the annexed drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention securely fixed upon a valise. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line m, n, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached vertical section through the valise and holder taken on the line, m, n.
Like numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the construction of my invention I use necessarily a resilient material, such as sheetmetal, brass or a like springy substance.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents a resilient piece of sheet-metal brass, embodying my invention consisting mainly of a cylinder or roll portion 1 and a fastener portion 1 The cylinder or roll portion 1' is rolled or bent cylindrically about one and a half times from the outer side and provided about the central portion of the outer edge with a leather or pliable tug 2 wherebythe roll portion 1' is drawn open forthe reception of the umbrella, parasol, cane, or like article, as in,- dicated by the dotted lines.
The fastener portion 1 being bent at right angles to the body of the cylinder or roll portion 1 is bent at right angles with itself and then bent back upon itself forming an intervening slot 3 and an inward projecting flange 1 for the purpose of catching over the valiseframe 4. The central part of the fastener .slot 5 for the reception of the lock on the valise-frame 4 which prevents the holder from slipping or sliding longitudinally on said frame. It will be seen from this peculiar construction that I not only produce a simple and novel holder but a useful article of manufacture that can be easily fixed to and. removed from a valise-frame and that by drawing out the cylinder or roll portion by the tug as indicated by the dotted lines, an umbrella,
parasol, cane 'or similar article may be inserted or removed at pleasure.
Having thus described my invention and fully explained the operation and advantages thereof, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. A resilient, metallic holder, adapted to be fixed to the frame of a valise, satchel, or
grip for the purpose of carrying an umbrella,
parasol, cane, or similar articles, the same comprising a cylinder or roll portion rolled or bent cylindrically about one .and a half times from the outer side and a fastener portion bent at right angles to the body of the cylinder or roll portion and provided with an intervening slot and an inward projecting flange for the purpose of catching over the frame of the valise, satchel, or grip, substantially as specified.
2. A resilient, metallic holder, adapted to be fixed to or removed from the frame of a valise, satchel, or grip for the purpose of carrying an umbrella, parasol, cane, or like articles, the same comprising a cylinder or roll portion, provided with a leather or pliable tug whereby the roll is drawn open for the reception or removal of the umbrella, parasol, cane, or similar article and a fastener portion provided with an intervening slot, an inward projecting flange, and a rectangular slot adapted to receive the lock on the frame of the valise, satchel, or grip whereby the holder is prevented from sliding longitudinally on the frame, substantially as specified.
AUGUST HENRY ALBERSHARDT.
