To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FEDRO G. WINK-FIELD, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention has relation to buckles for belts, garters, sleeve-holders, garment supporters, &c.; and it has for its object the provision of a device of the kind mentioned which shall be at once simple in, and economic of, construction, which shall not abrade or mar the web employed in connection therewith, nor present any rough or angular surfaces to Wear garments with which it comes in contact, while being serviceable in the highest degree.

To these ends my invention consists of a buckle composed of two members formed from wire-one, which may be termed the larger member composed of two parallel end bars, and two side bars, portions of the latter being bent inward, and a smaller member rectangular in form, with side-bars somewhat shorter than the side-bars of the larger member, both members being formed separately, all as I will hereinafter more fully describe and set forth in the appended claim.

Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings and to the letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features as the case may be, wherever they occur.

Of the drawings: Figure is'a perspective view of what may be considered a garter or sleeve-holder, equipped with my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a plan view drawn to an enlarged scale, of the two members composing my invention.

In the drawings a designates the larger member of the buckle, which consists of a length of wire bent so as to form two parallel end bars b b and two side bars a c, the latter being by preference, shorter than the former. The side bars 0 are bent inward, preferably at a central point, so as to afford bows d d for a purpose to be presently explained.

e designates the smaller member which is composed of a length of wire bent to rectangular form, that is, so as to constitute two parallel end bars ff, and two parallel side bars 9 g, the latter being shorter than the side bars 0 c of the member a.

Both of the members a and e have the adjoining ends of the length of wire out of which they are formed, covered bya sleeve or similar device h, as iscommon in forming buckles and similar devices from lengths of wire.

It is designed that in use my improved buckle shall engage and hold the ends of a Web or tape 0' as shown in Fig. 1, in which case a smaller member e will be laid upon the larger member a, the bowed portions 61 d of the side bars of the latter constituting a rest for the side bars 9 g of the member 6. One end of the tape e' is then passed up through the center of both members, down over one of the side bars f of the member e, and under the side barb of the member a, and the other end of the said tape is likewise passed up through the center of the two members, over the other end barf of the member e, and under the adjacent end bar b of the member a. In each case both ends of the web or tape 11 will, when any appreciable tension is put on the web, be held against being drawn back in the buckle, while at the same time, by relaxing the tension on the web a little, the ends can be drawn to any desired point to adjust the length of the web or belt.

It is to be noted that the two members are formed separate and independent of each other, and that substantially a minimum degree of simplicity exists in the construction of each.

It would of course be within the scope of my invention to form the two members of other material than a length of wire, and to. also give bearings for the member e different in form from the loops or bows d cl herein shown.

Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a Way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed is A buckle comprising in its construction two independent members, each composed of a length of wire bent to form side-bars and parallel end-bars, the sidebars of one member two subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of being shorterthan those of the other, and the August, A.
