IMPROVEMENT IN BASKET-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 51,491, dated Deceml er 12, 1865; antedated December 5, 1865.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be itknown that we, J. B. SWEETLAND and E. O. GOODRICH, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bas liet-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.

In the annexed drawing, making part of this machine, A represents a block, which is provided with suitable legs for supports, and which forms the base of the machine. Vertically through the center of this block is an opening, into which passes a standard, B. This standard B is divided into two parts, which are hinged together by means of a hinge, c, and connected by means of a quadrant, d, said quadrant being perforated, as shown, and one end secured to the upper portion ot' the block, while its other end passes into an opening in the lower portion ot' said standard, and is there secured by means of a pin.

D represents a form-block or head, upon which the basket is made. Passing' through this head vertically is a shaft, E, the lower end of which passes into a hole in the upper portion ot' the standard B, and turns in it, so as to allow the head to revolve. The head D is made the shape which it is desired to have the basket.

F represents a collar, which tits over the shaft E and rests upon the head D. In the periphery of this collar are openings, into which pass the ends of the staves or slats of the basket. The slats, after being secured at their upper ends in the disk F, are bent over the form or head D, and are secured at their lower ends by means of the spring-catches a a a. There are as many spring-catches secured beneath the head D as there are staves for the basket, and each stave is held down by a catch, unless loosened by the operator. In making up the basket, the staves are loosened, as desired, to allow of the strips being entwined among them.

By means of the standard B the height of the head is adjusted. By means of the hinge c and the quadrant el the head is adjusted to any desired inclination, and by the use ofthe shaft E the head is revolved in a horizontal plane for the convenience ot' the operator.

It will be seen from the construction and arrangement of the parts of this machine that the making ot' baskets will he much facilitated` and that any one possessed of ordinary skill can manufacture baskets with the machine.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The employment ot' the spring-catches a a a, used in connection with the head D, substantially as and for the purpose herein specitied.

2. The employment of the adjustable staff or standard B, when the same is used in the manner and for the purpose specitied.
