SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,176, dated July 25, 1893. Application filed March 30, 1893. Serial No. 468,358. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, PATRICK F. OULLEN and PATRICK F. MULoHRoNE, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hame- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hame fasteners, and has for its object to strengthen such devices by making the same of metal so that they will not be affected by climatic changes and also to provide a convenient fastening and means of attachment.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a collar,- and 2 the hames that are applied thereto in the usual manner between The upper and lower ends of each of the hames are provided with the ordinary form of D, that are movably attached, and each of the same is provided with an enlarged roll 3, of greater cross-sectional extent than the part of the D which it surrounds. e

The upper ends or Ds of thehames are connected by a rigid metallic curved strap 4, whose opposite ends are bent into substantial U-shaped form, as at 5, and the space between the terminating parts of said U -shaped ends and the adjacent part of the'strap is of less extent than the space between the said U-shaped ends wherein the Ds are movably mounted. That is, the said space between the said terminating parts of the U-shaped ends and the adjacent part of the strap is less than the cross-sectional extent of the roll 3, on the engaging D, to thereby prevent ready disconnection and causing the said roll to be sprung under the said terminating end. To facilitate this contraction the terminating part of each of the U-shaped ends is bentV vor entrance-throat to each of the said bends to prevent the straps from becoming disconnected from the Ds which they engage when they are separated, and which is fully illustrated in Fig. 2. The strap 6 is also formed with a downwardly-extending lug 10, that is formed with a transverse eye 11, and the strap 7 has a series of apertures or openings 12 therein, any one of which is arranged to engage the said lug l0 for the purpose of adjustable connection of the lower ends of the hames. The inner end of therstrap 7 is reduced and bent downwardly to form a grip 13, for drawing the said strap over on the said strap 6, in making the adjustment, and to the lower end of the said grip is attached a chain 14, carrying a linch-pin 15, at the free end thereof that is arranged to be inserted through the eye 11 of the lug 10 to hold the straps in adjusted position, it being seen that thesaid chain carrying the said pin always provides for keeping the latter in position for use and preventing it rfrom becoming lost. The straps 6 and 7 are curved, as shown, and will be made of suitable thickness and strength for the intended use.

Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of constructionmay be resorted to without departing from `the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is In combination with the lower ends of the hames having a D in connection with each, of two metallic straps each of which is formed with an outer U-shaped end having its termination bent toward the main body of each strap to contract the entrance to the said U- shaped end and prevent accidental disengagement of the straps from the heme-ends, one of Said straps being provided with a. down- Wardly-projeetng lug having an eye therethrough, and the other strap formed with a series of openings therein for adjustably engagging the said lug, and also provided with a downwardly-extending grip at the terminating end of the same for drawing the strap with which it is formed over upon the adjaeently-situated strap, and a chain attached to the lower end of the said grip and carrying a pin on the free end of the same tr- PATRICK F.
