UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS GUILFOYLE, OF OQLLINGYVOOD, CANADA.
CIGAR ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 505,401, dated September 19, 1893.
Application filed December 17, 1892. Serial No. 455,508. (No model.)
a simple, inexpensive funnel 0r hood shaped device, adapted to be attached to a cigar, which will efiectively serve to deflect the heat and smoke while smoking, to prevent such heat and smoke from passing into the eyes and nose of the smoker.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of such device, as hereinafter fully described in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im provement as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective rear view and Fig. 4 is a cross section.
My improvement comprises a funnel like or hood shaped body portion, formed of any light material, not easily set on flre, and preferably a non-conductor of heat: and such body consists of a base portion A, approximately horizontal and an upper conical hood portion B, open at the front end as at 1), its rear part tapering downwardly and rearwardly, and ending at an aperture 0, which registers with a pocket like portion D, open at both ends, and tapering from its front to its rear end for a purpose presently explained.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the cigar is fitted in the pocket D, its point being passed through the smaller end thereof, the hood portion projecting forward over the end of the cigar, such hood being adapted for adjustment on the cigar, it having a suitable finger piece F whereby it can be easily slid thereon. To hold the hood to any of its adjusted positions, I prefer, when such hood is formed of a springy material, to slit its rear end to form clamp prongs G, which have a slight clamp bearing against the cigar body. In some instances however, the end Gr of the hood may be formed of some elastic material which will snugly fit around the cigar. These clamp portions may however be entirely dispensed with, when the holder is made of some pliable material. In such instances the holders are made with the opening 0 of difierent sizes.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it will be seen that the device can be easily placed on the cigar and moved to any place thereon.
By constructing the hood with an outwardly projecting portion, the heat and smoke from the end of the cigar is prevented from passing into the nose or eyes of the smoker, conveying it, as it were, outward and upward from the face, giving the smoker free breathing without the necessity of removing the cigar from his mouth. Furthermore as the outer end is open, there is no difliculty in lighting the cigar, and as the pocket D is flared toward the front, the cigar can be smoked up to near its poi pt, without having the lighted portion coming in direct contact with such pocket, such construction also providing for a free circulation of air around the cigar while burning. By the use of this device the cigar will not go out so easily,
as without it, and the effect on the person smoking is much less injurious in every respect than it is when smoking in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A smoke deflector for cigars comprising a body portion apertured at its lower end to slip onto the cigar, and its upper end extended upwardly and forwardly to form a hood portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2.. A smoke and heat deflector for cigars, comprising a body having a pocket D tapered from the rear to the front, said pocket adapted to receive the cigar therethrough and a hood portion projected upward and forward as and for the purpose described.
3. A heat and smoke deflector for cigars, comprising a body portion formed with a pocket to receive the cigar through it, a finger piece and a forwardly and upwardly exend, and a forwardly and upwardly extendtending hood portion as and for the purpose ing hood portion, allsubstantially as set forth. described.
4. A new article of manufacture for the rlHOMAS GUILFOYLE' 5 purpose described, comprising a body portion Witnesses:
having pocket D to receive the cigar, said E. H. NOLAN, pocket having clamping portions at its rear D. J. HANLEY.
