SCREW-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,195, dated April 11, 1893.
Application filed December 20, 1892. Serial No. 455,750. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK T. BRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohariton, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Screw-Cap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in screw caps for jars, can tops, nozzle ends, and other analogous purposes, and has for its object to provide a handle or finger-piece, in connection with the cap, whereby it may be readily removed by furnishing a convenient form of grip; and with this object in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a screw-cap fora jar, showing the improved attachment applied in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a similar view of asmaller cap adapted for use in connection with a can top or spout. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the attachment disconnected and the parts thereof separated. Fig. a is a plan view of the blank from which the attachment is formed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a jar or can top, and 2 the screw-p cap of the same. To the upper portion of the said screw-cap is secured a handle or grip 3, that constitutes the improved attachment and that is formed from a blank of the contour shown by Fig. 4, that may be stamped out of suitable sheet-metal and bent up into shape as partially indicated by Fig. 3. In bending the said attachment into shape it is doubled upon itself, thereby forming a central bend 4, and the free ends bent outwardly at right angles at opposite sides to provide attaching ears 5 that are soldered or otherwise secured to the top portion of the screwcap. The ends of the said ears 5 are rounded to have the same conform approximately to the general contour of the upper portion of the screw-cap, and are of such extent proportionately to the dimension of the upper end of the screw-cap as to form a secure and rigid fastening when they are properly posi tioned and applied. Before the attachment is secured in position a reinforcing or stiffening strip of metal, designated by the numeral 6, is inserted between the parts of the said handle or grip in order to increase the rigidity of the latter and to resist strain brought to bear upon the said handle or grip in unscrewing the cap. The said strip 6 is suitably secured to the said handle or grip and may be of any thickness proportionate to the size of the attachment and is preferably made to conform to the contour of said attachment.
It often necessitates considerable inconvenience in removing screw-caps from the tops of jars or cans, owing to oxidiz'ation of the metal, or' the escape of sticky substances from the jar or can, and that lodge in the screw-threads and coagulate, thereby acting to partially cement the parts and render it difficult to remove the screw-cap. The attachment hereinbefore described is intended to overcome this objection by providing convenient means in connection with the screwcap, whereby the latter may be unscrewed; and to construct the attachment of such rigidity and strength as to permit considerable tension and strain to be applied thereto, it being seen that without such an attachment a proper purchase could not be obtained on the cap to remove the same,'and as has been often found necessary to use gripping tools for the purpose set fortlnthat naturally would injure the screw-threads of the cap and thereby destroy the purpose and intent of the same.
It will be seen that by making the blank shown in Fig.4of metal of sufiicient stiffness, that the use of the stiffening strip 6 may be dispensed with.
Having described this invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a screw-cap, of a handle or grip attached to the upper end thereof and consisting of a doubled blank having theends thereof outturned at right angles and firmly secured to the said top or upper end of the cap for the purpose of re moving the latter, said blank being formed from suitable sheet-metal, substantially as described.
