Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM PHILIP Bos- SERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tangier, in the county of VVoodward and State of Oklahoma, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in an Adjustable Detachable Bail, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to carriers for jars or other receptacles which are not provided with handles or any means by which they may be pendently supported, and aims especially to produce an adjustable and detachable carrier which may be afiixedto different sizes of receptacles, and may be readily detachedwhen desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a simplified structure which may be quickly engaged with thereceptacle; to provide a bail of the usual type by which the receptacle can be conveniently carried; to provide suitable means by which the device may be readily adjusted into snug engagement with the receptacle; and to provide a structure which will in no way interfere with the person carrying the receptacle.
The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which:

Fig. 3 is a side elevational fragmentary view of my device showing to advantage the thumb nut by which the device is held in engagement with the receptacle,
Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of the invention illustrating to advantage the main ner in which the receptacle embracing member is held and showing a portion of the supporting bail,

In the drawings a receptacle 1 of the usual configuration is shown which is equipped at its upper end with an annular flange 2.
My improved carrier consists of a receptacle embracing split ring 3 which may either be flat in cross section as shown in Fig. 8 or round in cross section as shown in Fig. 9. One end of the ring is bent out at right angles to provide a finger abutment 4c while the other end laps the inner periphery of the right angled end thereof as shown to advantage in Fig. 1. A finger grip 5 is slidably mounted on said ring, and in this instance comprises a bent metal plate, the inner end of which is offset and provided with an opening 6 which is relatively wider than the ring, so as to slide freely over the latter but being bindable therewith when pressure is exerted upon the thumb piece at the other end of the finger grip. The opening 6 may be either rectangular or circular as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, to correspond with the contour of the ring, shown in Figs. 8 and 9. It is to be understood that the finger grip 5 is cooperable with the finger abutment 4 so that the ring, may be drawn into snug engagement with the outer periphery of the receptacle. If desired, small projections may be formed on the inner periphery of the ring, as indicated at 7 and shown to advantage in Fig. 11 in order to prevent slippage.
Ears 8 are provided each of which comprises a plate the lower end of Which is pressed outwardly to produce a recess 9 while theupper end of each is provided with an opening through which the end of a bail 10 is engaged. The recess 9 is adapted to receive the head of an eye-bolt 11, the shank of the bolt being threaded and mounted through an opening in the recess end of the ear while the ring passes through the eye. A thumb nut 12 is mounted upon the threaded shank of the bolt 11 through the medium of which the lapping ends of the ring are clamped together against movement in the manner shown to advan tage in Fig. 4. y
In the use of this device, the ring 3 is first placed around the receptacle 1 after which the bolts 11 are arranged at substantially diametrical points and the ends of said ring overlapped through the eye of one of the bolts. Then the thumb nuts 12 are threaded on the shanks of the bolts and operated into snug engagement with the ears 8 so as to clamp the ears against movement. It is of course to be understood that in order I to draw the ring snugly in engagement with the receptacle, the finger abutment 4 and the finger grip 5 are pressed toward each other with an obvious result.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made Within the scope of the appended claims without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a carrier of the type described',the combination with a split ring having lapping ends whereof the outermost is turned out into a finger abutment, and a finger grip having an opening near one end adj-ustably embracing the inner end of said ring, its other end constituting a thumb piece standing adjacent said abutment; of eye-bolts embracing said ring at diametrically opposite points, ears on the shanks of the bolts, and a bail connecting the ears.
2. In a carrier of the type described, the combination with a split ring having lapping ends whereof the outermost is turned out into a finger abutment, and a finger grip having an opening near one end adjustably embracing the inner end of said ring, its other end constituting a thumb piece standing adjacent said abutment; of eye-bolts embracing said ring at diametrically opposite points, ears having recesses receiving the heads of said bolts and openings through which their shanks pass, their nuts abutting the outer sides of the ears, and a bail pivotally connecting said ears.
3. In a carrier of the type described, the combination with a split ring adapted to surround a can and having lapping ends; of two eye-bolts, one embracing said ends where they lap and the other embracing the ring at a point opposite the first, ears having recesses receiving the heads of said bolts and openings through which their shanks pass, their nuts abutting the outer sides of the ears, and a bail pivotally connecting said ears.
