SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,570, dated September 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANCISCO R. DE Es- TENOZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clappers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Myinvention consists of apair of clappers, one of which is stationary and the other rotatable and supported by the former and having a string connected therewith and passing through an opening in the supporting one.

It further consists of means, substantially as described, for supporting the rotatable clapper clear of the stationary one.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of clappers embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the same, one of the clappers being so mounted as to be readily rotated for winding the operating-cord thereon.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

Referring to the drawings, A and B designate clappers, which are placed on each other, and O designates a cord, which is passed through an opening 0 in the lower clapper B and connected with the clapper A so as to be wound thereon, it being seen that after the cord is properly wound on said clapperA it is pulled through the clapper B, whereby the clapper A is rotated, and as it strikes the clapper B in its rotation thereon a clapping is eifected by the same in a convenient and decisive manner.

In order to support the clapper A clear of the clapper B while winding the cord thereon, I provide standards, arches,or other bearingpieces D, which rise from the clapper B and have open slots E in the tops of the same. Projecting laterally from the clapper A are journals E, which are adapted to enter the slots E, and thus have their hearings on the standards D. When the clapper A is raised from the clapper B, it may be made to rest on the standards D and then rotated by hand or by pulling the string in opposite directions, after which by a proper motion said clapper may be thrown from its seat and dropped upon the clapper B, when by drawing the cord the rotation of the clapper A may be eflected, the striking of said clapper upon the other one causing the clapping sounds, as previously stated. The under side of the clapper Bis provided with a handle H, which has an opening therein for the passage of the cord 0 therethrough, said opening communicating with the opening 0 in said clapper. The ends of the journals G have connected with them the bells J, which ring or are sounded when the clapperA is rotated, without, however, interfering with the motions of the clapper A in either of the actions thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-

1. Two clappers, one placed above the other, in combination with a cord which is connected with one of the clappers so as to rotate the same on the other clapper, said cord passing through the lower clapper, substantially as described.

2. A pair of clappers, one of which has slotted standards and the other of which is rotatable, having journals supported in said standard and an operating-cord, substantially as described.

3. The clapper B, provided with supports D, having open slots E, the rotatable clapper A, having journals F, and an operating-cord O, which is connected with the rotatable clapper and guided in the other clapper, said parts being combined substantially as described.

4. Two clappers, one of which is provided with standards, each having open slots at its upper end, the other clapper having journals adapted to be inserted in said slots, a cord wound around said latter-mentioned clapper and passing through an opening in the other one, and a handle on said first clapper, said parts being combined substantially as described.
