COMBINED EAR-TRUMPET AND CANE-HANDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,171, dated May 16, 1832,

(No model To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY WA Ds'rnrN, ot' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Ear- Trumpet and (Jane-Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved ear'trumpe't which can be attached to a cane or umbrella-stick to be used as a handle for the same.-

The invention consists in a cane-handle combined with an ear-trumpet contained therein, which cane-handle is provided with apertures for admitting the sound, these apertures being adapted to be closed when the ear-trumpet is not in use.

The invention also consists in details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved ear-trumpet and cane-handle, showing it attached to a cane or uinl.)rella-stick. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 00 00, Fig. 1.

A tube, A, of metal, hard rubber, celluloid, or other suitable material, is provided at its upper end with a hollow bulb or head, 13, from which a hollow arm, (1, of greater or less length projects. A tube, D, extends from the outer open end of the arm C, through the same, passes down the tube A, is bent upward, and is provided at its upper end with an enlarged funnel-shaped mouth, E, within or directly below the hollow head or bulb B. The tube A is provided at its lower end with a series of vertical slots, F. A tube, G, adapted to be secured on the upper end of a cane, H, or umbrella-stick, fits into the lower end of the tube A in such a manner that the tube A can turn in the tube G, which is also provided with a series of longitudinal slots, J, which are so located that they can coincide with the slots F of the tube A. A pintle, K, passes transversely through the tube A, and through transverse slots L of the tube G, for the purpose of holding the tube A. loosely on the tube G.

The operation is as follows: If the eartrumpet is to be used, the tube A is turned so that the slots F and Jwill coincide. Thesound enters through these slots, passes up in the tube A, and is deflected by the hollow bulb or head B into the mouth E of the tube. The sounds are thus collected, and if the end of the arm 0 is placed in the ear the sounds pass through the tube D to the tympanum. It the ear-trumpet is not to be used, the cylinder A is turned so that the strips between the slots of one tube cover the slots of the other, so that the slots cannot be seen and the ear-trumpet will have the appearance of an ordinary cane or umbrella-stick handle. This ear-trumpet can be held to the car without showing that the person is using an ear-trumpet, for it will appear as it the person is holding the end of a cane or umbrella-stick handle ator near the ear. Furthermore, the ear-trumpet is very handy, and is ready for use any moment, all that is necessary being to turn the tube A so that the slots F and J will coincide.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the cane-tube A, having hollow head B and arm 0, of the open tube 1), commencing at the end of arm 0, passing through said arm down into tube A, and then turned upward and carried with a flared end, E, into the head B, as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with a cane-handle pro vided with side apertures, of an ear-trumpet contained within the handle, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with the tube A, provided with apertures or slots F, of the tube G, provided with apertures or slots J, and the ear trumpet D E in the tube A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
