UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcnc JARED MARIS, OF'OINOINNATI, OHIO.
DUST AND MUD CAP FOR VEH|CLE=HUBS.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,257, dated January 3, 1893.
. Application filed April 12, 1892. Serial No. 428,861- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JARED MARIs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented acert-ain new and useful Improvement in Dust and Mud Gaps forPoint- Bands for Vehicle-Hubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dust and mud caps for point bands for vehicle hubs in which the caps are secured in position by means of springs formed in both the band and the mud and dust cap as will appear more specifically as I- proceed with the specification and in the drawings.
I am aware that various devices have been used for the purpose of securing dust and mud caps to point bands but know of none that are so good, or can be made so cheaply for the kind, or class of bands to which these are adapted. The bands to which these dustand mud caps are best suited are such as are smooth and true on the inside and such as have a sheet metal thimble with the edge at the inner end so located as to form an offset or shoulder on the interior of the band near its outer end.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and durable means of applying a dust and mud cap to point bands for vehicle hubs that will not require any special tool for their insertion or withdrawal. The process of accomplishing this consists in certain details of construction of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The process of manufacturing these articles is as follows. For brass or composition bands that are turned inside a groove or offset is made near the outer end of the band for the reception of a bead on the thimble extension of the cap. For malleable iron bands I use a sheet metal covering that is attached to the iron band by being spun over the rear, or by spinning into an offset or groove on the exterior of the iron band at or near the outer end and turning it inside the band to form the offset to receive the dust and mud cap. In some cap and in some caps I cut slots to form reenforcing springs. Formation of springs out of one piece is preferable, but I do not wish to confine myself to those specifically in the drawings but claim any form that comes legitimately within the scope of my invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of one form of my improvement showing the band in place on the hub and the cap in place on the band. Fig. 2 is a section of band and sheet metal cover which forms the inside thimble when slotted to form springs. Fig 3 is a section of cap when slotted.
s Fig. 1 is the iron band g the sheet metal cover Z the offset y the hubi the cap and dotted lines r r the slots in the thimble that forms it into springs.
15 Fig. 3 is the cap and h h slots corresponding to slots in the thimble Fig. 2.
What I desire to claim as new and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of a point band for vehicle hubs of a dust and mud cap when the thimble in the front end of the band is formed of sheet metal and slotted to make springsto grip the tubular formed part of the cap to hold it in position substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a point band ofa dust and mud cap when the band has a groove or offset on its inside near its outer end of a dust and mud cap when the tubular shaped extension of the cap is provided with a bead or offset adapted to engage the shoulder in the band substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a point band of a dust and mud cap when the sheet metal thimble of the band is slotted and the thimble of the cap is similarly slotted so as to re-enforce each other substantially as set forth.
JARED MARIS.
