CHARLES A. LINDBERG, OF S TURGIS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO STURGIS STEEL GO-CART COMPANY, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
WHEEL-RETAINING SPINDLE-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed April 12, 1920. Serial No. 373,116.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LINDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVlieel-Retaining Spindle-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wheel retaining spindle caps.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved wheel retaining spindle cap which is very secure when engaged and at the same time may be quickly released and is neat and attractive in appearance.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a detail view with the axle and wheel partially broken away, parts of the cap and spindle being shown in vertical central section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is an inside view of the disk-like spindle collar member prior to the bending of the locking dog supporting arm.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
' Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the axle and 2 the wheel of a childs carriage for which my improvements are particularly designed and adapted by me in practice. The axle is provided with a thrust collar 8 at the inner end of the spindle 4. I provide a cup-shaped cap 5 formed as a sheet metal stamping, the rim of the.cap being prefr erably outwardly flared at 6 to provide a bearing for the outer end of the hub.
At the inner end of the cap I secure a disk-like spindle collar member 7 having the flange-like collar 8 formed integrally therewith. The spindle 4 is provided with a hole 9 while the collar 8 has a hole 10 adapted to be brought into register with the hole in the spindle. Opposite these holes the collar member 7 is provided with an inwardly projecting arm 11 having a hole 12 therein'through which the dog 18 is slidably arranged. The dog has a return bend at its inner end providing an engaging portion 1 1 which passes through the openings in the collar and spindle when they are brought into alinement as shown in Fig. II, locking the cap to the spindle.
The collar member and the arm 11 are formed integrally as a sheet metal stamping. The dog 13 is provided with a cap 15 slidable in the hole 16 inside the cap, the coiled spring 17 being arranged between the head 15 and the arm to urge this dogor detent to its engaging position.
By this arrangement of parts, I provide a structure which is simple and economical to produce, convenient to manipulate, and neat and attractive in appearance, same being well adapted for use in childrens carriages and vehicles for which it is, as stated, especially designed.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain adaptations of my improvements which I contemplate and which might be desirable for other types of wheels as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a spindle and wheel, of a spindle cap having a side opening therein, a disk-like member secured in the inner end of said cap and provided with an inwardly projecting flange-like spindle collar and an inwardly projecting arm having an opening therein alined with said opening in said cap, said collar and spindle having registering holes opposite said arm, a locking dog slidable in said hole in said arm and having a cap-like head slidable in said opening in said cap, the inner end of said dog having a return bend therein engaging said holes in said collar and spindle, and a coiled spring arranged on said dog between the said head and supporting arm.
2. The combination with a spindle and wheel, of a spindle cap having a side openwheel, of a spindle cap,-a collar member provided with a spindle collar and an arm, said collar and spindle having holes adapted to be brought into register, a locking dog slidable in said arm and cap, the inner end of said dog having a return bend therein engaging said holes in said collar and spindle, and a spring urging said dog to its engaging position.
4:. The combination with a spindle and wheel, of a spindle cap, a collar member provided'with a spindle collar and an arm,
said collar and spindle having holes adapted to be brought into register, a locking dog slidable in said arm and cap to engage said holes in said collar and spindle, and a spring urging said dog to its engaging position;
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
