No. 484,943. Patented 004; 25, 1892.
y "NrTED" ASTATI-3S PATENT OFFICE.
CHESTER B. THORNTON, OF KAINTUOK, IDAHO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO vVILLIAM E. THORNTON, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,943, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed December 21, 1891. Serial No. 415,812. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHESTER B. THORNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kaintuck, in the county of Bingham and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Plow Attach ment, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to an attachment for a plow, whereby the same is converted from an ordinary plow to a sulky-plow; and the objects 1n vlew are to construct the attachment in a cheap and simple manner and to adapt the same to be set so as to adjust the plow for running deep or shallow, which adjustment is under the command of the operator.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a plow provided with attachments constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the supporting wheel and arch.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a plow-beam, 2 the plow, and 3 the handles, all of the ordinary construction and comprised in that style of plow in connection with which I have chosen to illustrate my invention.
To one side of the beam l there is securely bolted an elliptical or nearly-circular plate 4, the upper edge of which is concentric with a diametrically-disposed bar 5, traversing the plate, said upper edge being provided with teeth, thereby forming a ratchet. The bar 5 is offset slightly from the plane of the plate 4, and between the lower bar 7 and the cross-bar 5 a curved lever 8 is located and pivoted, as at 9, to the bar 5. The lower end of the lever is bifurcated, and upon a short axle 10 has mounted for rotation a gage-wheel 11. The upper end of the lever is provided with aneugaging pawl 12, spring-pressed into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet 6, by which said lever may be set at any angle with relation to the beam, and hence the front end or nose of the beam raised or lowered, as will also be the point of the plow, and thus said plow be made to run at any desired depth.
The means for securing the plate 4 to the plow-beam may be ordinary bolts, or in this instance U-shaped bolts designed to embrace the plow-beam and designated as 13.
Bya U -shaped bolt 14 an inverted- U -shaped arch is secured to the landside of the plowbeam opposite the plow. This arch consists of an inner and outer section designated as 15 Vand 16, respectively, the outer section being 6o pivoted, as at 17, to the inner section and provided with a concentric slot 18 near its angle,
in which a stud 19, extending from the outer end of the inner section, rides. The outer section may, therefore,be moved upon its pivot in a circular manner either to the front or rear and be locked at any point of its movement by the nut 19 on the stud or bolt 18. Upon the pivot-bolt of these sections there is secured the rear end of a diagonal brace 20, 7o the front end of which is bolted to the rear side of the plate 4.
2l designates a perforated standard made vertically adjustable in the outer section of the arch bybolts 22. At the lower end of the standard there is located a stub-axle 24, and upon the same is mounted a supporting-wheel 25. This wheel may be raised and lowered in accordance with the depth of penetration at which it is desired the plow shall run. 8o Seat-standards 25a rise from the arch and brace of the attachment, and upon the same a drivers seat 26 is located.
The operation of the plow thus provided with my attachment will be at once obvious, and hence will require no specific description. The operator being seated upon the seat ot' the attachment may read ily regulate the depth of penetration of the plow bya proper manipulation of the lever S. By the application of 9o such an attachment I convert an ordinary plow into a sulky-plow with all the inherent advantages attained in the latter, and can readily remove the attach mont and return the plow to its normal condition when occasion may demand.
The attachment is both cheap and durable and may be readily manufactured.
Having described my invention, what I I claim is- 1. The combination, with the plow-beam, of the removable arch secured at its inner end rated standard carrying a supporting-Wheel, and bolts for'a'djusting theV standard to the outer arch-section, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own I have hereto ailxed my signature in thepresence of two witnesses.
CHESTER B. THORNTON.
