No. 216,448. Patented June 10, 1879.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICER GEORGE 'W. PETERSON,
or OXFORD, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HILL-SIDE PLOWS.
Specification orming part of Letters Patent No. 216,448, dated June 10, 1879; application filed April 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W: PETERSON, of Oxford, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hill Side Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of' the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved plow, and Fig. 2 is a top view thereof.
This invention has relation to side hill plows; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the lateral standards, pivoted to the beam and having handle-extensions, whereby the shovels are raised or depressed, the curved beam forming a brace in rear of the shovels, and the adj ustment-fastenings, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main or draft beam, provided with the usual handles B and braces 0- therefor. The rear end, D, of the beam is curved downward and forward, and provided with a bracing-toe, a, which is formed with a central tongue or projection, 12, and lateral shoulders or rests c.
E E indicate the pair of lateral standards, which are pivoted on each side of the beam by means of a bolt, d. These standards pass through ways on each side of the beam formed by side pieces, 0, through which the pivotbolt passes, and which are perforated at g, for the passage of the studs h of the spring-fastenings k, which extend to the rear. Each standard is made in curved form, resembling the letter S, and is provided with a curved brace, 1, extending forward and upward within the side guide, 0, said brace being perforated at m and 0t, for engagement with the spring-fastenings; respectively, when the shovel is depressed or in its working position, and when it is raised against the beam.
The upper ends, t, of the standards are extended to the rear, in position to be readily reached and operated by the plowman.
The endsof the standards may be slotted for the attachment and adjustment of the shovels G, and when one of the plows is adjusted for work its standard rests against the toe a of the beam and is firmly braced thereby.
The plows are operated one at a time, one of the standards being locked by its spring in the raised position, while the other is fastened in the depressed or working position. At the end of a furrow the adjustment of the standards is reversed, so that the earth is thrown always in the same direction.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the beam A, having the rear curved portion, D, provided with a toe, to, and lateral shoulders c, and the guides c at each side of the beam, of the S'shaped standards E, extending through the guides and pivoted to the beam, the curved braces I, extending through the said guides and having perforations m n, and the spring-latches secured to the guides and having the spurs h, extending through perforations in the guides to engage perforations m n in the braces aforesaid, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON PETERSON.
