Be it known that I, JOHN H. BATES, of Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines in which revolving scrubbers are used; and its object is to furnish a simple, cheap, and effective washing-machine, and one that requires a minimum amount of labor to operate it; and my invention more particularly resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully specified, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View. Fig. 3 is a detail.

The tub A has lugs B fastened to its side, which rest on shoulders C on the sides of the box E. Through the bottom of the tub A projects the shaft F of a circular corrugated scrubber The lower end of the shaft F is bent at right angles to form a crank H, to the end of which crank is pivoted a forked connecting-rod I, having two arms, which pass one on either side of a post D of the frame E and are hooked o r otherwise loosely se cured to the ends of a curved piece J, which is firmly fastened or welded to the lower end of a lever K and at right angles to it.

Through a bearing N in the top part O of the box E, over the top of the tub A, extends a shaft P, to the lower end of which is fastened a circular scrubber Q, with corrugations on its lower side similar to those on the upper side of the lower scrubber G. The

the lever K by means of the connecting-rod S. The top part O of the box E is hinged at T to the side of box E, so that it can be raised, thus carrying with it the scrubber Q.

The clothes to be washed are placed in the tub on the scrubber G. The top O of the box E is then closed, as shown in Fig. 1, carrying with it the upper scrubber Q. The operator then grasps the lever K at its upper end and imparts to it a forward and backward motion. The lever K is pivoted in the bracket M at such a distance from the post D as to allow the lever to oscillate through a distance sufcient to turn the cranks I-I R through about one-third of a circle.

It is readily seen from the drawings that the lower scrubber has a circular movement backward and forward under the clothes, while the upper scrubber has a similar motion forward andbackward on the top of the clothes.

rlhe corrugated surfaces on the scrubbers are made either of wood or galvanized iron. The boxing in the bottom of the tub through which the shaft F passes is packed to prevent leakage.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a washing-machine, the combination of a frame, a washingtub supported on the frame by means of lugs, a rock-shaft journaled in the bottom of the tub, carrying an uneven or scrubbing surface, a rock-shaft journaled in the frame above the tub, carrying an uneven or scrubbing surface, crankarms on the rock-shafts, an oscillating lever pivoted on the frame, and links connecting the cranks with the lever, substantially as described.
