UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
MARTIN LAPPE, OF ALLEGI-IENY, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO-TIIIRDS TO II. XV. URLING ANI) G. A. URLING, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
NoN-EXPLOSIVE CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,606, dated December 8, 1891.
Application filed September 17, 1890. Serial No. 365,296. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN LAPPE, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Explosive Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni apart of this specitication.
My invention relates to an improved noneXplosive oil-can; and it consists in a wiregauze covering each of the openings ot' the can, together with an automatically-operated valve for the purpose of admitting air to the can without removing the cap or cover, and certain other details of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional side elevation of an ordinary oilcan having my improvements shown attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the top or mouth of the can, show-- ing the gauze and vent-valve. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the gauze usedin the said mouth of the can. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the nozzle or exit-pipe, showing the position of the Wire-gauze arranged therein. Fig. 5 is a front view of the same, having the cap or cover removed therefrom.
To put my invention into practice with an ordinary oil-can ct, I arrange and secure in the opening at the top a wire-gauze b and locate the same a short .distance beneath the upper periphery of the said opening. Fitted in the cap or covering c of this can ct is a conis provided with a small loose weight g, which is held or secured by a short transverse pin h, passed through the extension e and at right. angles to the same. This pin h also serves to retain the valve in position or prevent the This valve same from becoming detached. CZ is for the purpose of admitting air to the interior of the can ct through an opening t' in the cap c, while oil is being poured from the can a. Secured in a suitable position in the interior of the nozzle k is another Wire-gauze Z, and the said nozzle 7o, provided with the ordinary cap m.
In operation a can provided with gauze coverings at each opening Will ettectually eX- clude all fire from the interior of the can ct, as is Well known in the art.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- An oil-can having a gauze disk secured within the same below the opening in the top thereof, a cover fitted over said opening and provided with an aperture in its upper end, a valveseat arranged within the cover above the top ot' the can when the cover is placed in position thereon, and a reciprocating valve seated in said seat, substantially as described, t'or the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto aftix my signature this 4th day of September, A. D. 1890. l
