To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE MEISLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a box formed of a. body of wood and a paper bottom cemented or gummed thereto, thus producing alight, strong, and inexpensive article.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the body and bottom of a box, shown separately, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side view and partial vertical section thereof, the parts being joined, in perspective. Fig. .3. represents a perspective view of the box with a cover thereon. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of the meeting portionsof the body and bottom on an enlarged scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of a box, and B the bottom thereof. The body is formed of a coil of thin wood, shaving,- or veneer, the outer end of the same being socured to the contiguous portion of the'body The bottom is formed of paper stamped into shape, with a raised rim or flange O on the circumference thereof and a groove or depression 1) just within said rim, said groove receiving the lower edge of the body. A'quantity of glue, cement, or gum E is applied to said lower edge of the body or introduced into the groove D, so that when the body is fitted to-the bottom it is-securely connected therewith by having a lower portion thereof embedded in the glue, which latter forms a water tight joint between said lower portion and the walls and bottom of the groove, the rim 0 aiding in bracing said lower, portion in position and. the

glue also serving to stiifen the same.

As the body is formed of a coil of wood, it will be found light, strong, and durable, and

as the bottom is cemented, g1ued, or gummed thereto and the said cement or other material becomes hard the said bottom cannot be removed without actually breaking off the same, the attachment of the bottom thus being reliable in its nature, especially'so as some of the cement, &c., enters between the conv0lutions of the body A, forming .an additional. connection of the body with the bottom, or vice versa. In some cases it is desirable to place a false wooden bottom on the paper bottom, the same being shown at B, Fig. 4, it being secured to said bottom B by cement, glue, &c., on its under side, the cement E connecting its'periphery with the body A, form ing a joint thereat of a water-tight nature.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A box constructed of a body formed of oiled wood and a bottom of paper, the latter having a circumferential flange and'an inner .groove, the lower edge of the body being seated on the base of the groove and secured thereto by adhesive material in the groove and within the flange, embedding the inner, outer, and bottom walls of said edge and entering the convolutions of the coils, all-substantially as described.

2. As a new articleof manufacture, a partly wooden and partly paper box, the body of the box being a coil of wood and the bottom being of paper, in a groove of which the lower part of the said body is inserted, and a false bottorh of wood securedto the upper face of the bottom and to the inner'face of the lower portion of the body,substantially as described.
