To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER R. MAGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Toilet-Seat, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.

This invention has reference to improvements in toilet seats, and particularly in such seats constituted in part of wooden frames.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a toilet seat having a wooden or similar frame With a sanitary metal ring or member sustained by said frame.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.

T he invention consists in the metallic ring or seat member and in the manner in which it is mounted in the frame.

The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Toilet seats are preferably made of wood owing to the strength and durability of the same and the economy of its manufacture but these seats have some objectionable features among which is that foreign matter is apt to adhere to and to be absorbed by the grain of the wood. In the washmg of these wooden seats or portions of them the water and detergent acts to remove the finish of the surface of the wood as well as the filling of the grain so that, thereafter, foreign matter more readily is received by the grain of the wood and renders the same unsanitary.

This latter objection app-lies particularly to the inner edge of the seat ring.

In carrying this invention into practice I construct or provide a sheet metal ring member generally oval in plan view and having the continuous inner edge or wall 5 from which its integral walls 6 and 7 extend outward; lower wall 6 may be substantially flat and at its periphery has the tongues or extensions 8, 8 while upper wall 7 is some what convex, flaring outward from said edge 5 and at its outer edge has the tongues 9, 9.

The seat frame is constructed of the side members 10, 10 the back member 11 and the front member 12 all having tongue and groove connecting elements and so shaped that when fitted together they receive and closely embrace the edges of the walls 6 and 7 and having rabbets 13, 13 and 1 1-, l-i to receive the tongues 8, 8 and 9, 9 respectively of said walls 6 and 7, whereby the ring constituted in part by said walls 6 and 7 is sustained in position.

In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a ring of a slightly modified construction but similar in shape to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this modified construction the walls 6 and 7 extend outward from edge 5 to form a ring of suitable dimensions and the outer portions of said walls 6 and 7 are then bent inward toward each other and then outward to constitute the duplex rib or lip 15 which is received by the groove 16 formed in the inner wall of the frame members 17, 17 and 18 and 19. In Fig. 3 I have shown these latter frame members in position as about to be assembled or brought together with the rib 15 of the ring partially received into the groove 16 of the frame members.

The tongue and groove connection be tween the frame members of either the preferred or modified construction illustrates but one of many well known expedients used to effect interlocking or overlapping of parts of a built up frame of this nature and such tongue and groove connection does not in itself necessarily constitute part of this invention.

Either or both of the walls 6 and 7 of the metal ringmay have a coating of enamel or other material to improve their appearance and to provide a hard smooth sanitary surface or said Walls 6 and 7 may be treated in any known manner to improve their sanitary qualities.

I am of course aware that the metal ring may be secured to the frame in other Ways than that shown and, hence, it is not my intention to limit my invention except as herein claimed.

Copies of this patent may be obtained for Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A toilet seat comprising a frame, and a sheet metal ring having upper and lower walls extending outward from a continuous inner edge, the outer portions of said Walls terminating in tongues received by rabbets of said frame.
