Description

PATENTED SEPT. 13, 1864.
J. SPAULDING. WATER WHEEL.
UNITED STATES ATENT rrrcn.
JOHN SPAULDING, OF MOUNT HOLLY, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WHEELS.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 4 3.230, dated September 13. 1864.
To all whom, it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN SPAULDING, of Mount- Holly, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented an Improved Screw Water Wheel or Motor; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a vertical section ot'myimproved motor as arranged within its case. Fig.2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a lower end View, of
the wheel or motor.
My said wheel or motor, in the main is con structed like what is termed a twist-auger,
or, in other words, it has a long plate twisted and extended from a shaft, the axis of the shaft and the twist being a straight lineor in volves, such casing leading vertically out of a dame or conduit, 0. The central part of the lower extremity of the motor has a pivot, a,
to rest in a step, b, the shaftfbeing supported in a bearing, 9. The two diminishing spiral f'channels of the motor are shown at c d.
I have found that when the channels are diminished in cross-section as they descend the water will operate with greater useful effect on the motor to rotate it than when each ot'its channels is made of equal width throughout.
I The ratio of diminution to produce the most useful efl'ect I have not been able to discover, but I have faund the contraction of the chan nel at its lower end to be at or about at onethird of. what it is at its upper end or middle to operate to good advantage. The water, by
running through two separate helical channels, intertwisted, as set forth, operates with much better results than'when sufl'ered to flow in one helical channel only, as it insures a greater steadiness and regularity of motion of the motor, and by acting on more extended surfaces can operate with less loss of power.
I do not claim the en ployment of asingle screw in a tubular case as a'motor or wheel'to be operated by the gravitating force of water when allowed to flow through the said case.
I claim-. Y The improved twisted-plate auger motor or water-wheel, as made-in manner and with diminishing channels, and to operate substantially as described.
JOHN SPAULDING.
