(No Model.) DE L. KENNEDY. PUNGHING MACHINE. No. 448,525.
llNiTED STATES PATENT PUNCHING-MACH'INE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,525, dated March 1'7, 1891.
Application filed December 11, 1890. Serial No. 374,306- (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DE LANCY KENNEDY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the means of obtaining and applying a gradually-increasing power in forcing a punch or other tool to its work. In my patent, No. 148,566, dated March 17, 1874, I have shown the application to a lever of what are termed two rolling cams. I11 my present invention I have improved upon my former construction by employing two rolling or eccentric toothed cams in connection with a lever whose head is toothed and placed between said cams, one of the cams having a stationary and the other a moving pivot, and the lever beinglinked to both cams.
By such construction increased power and a reduced movement of the operating-lever are obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a punching-machine having my present improvement embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 00 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 corresponds with Fig. 2 of my Patent No. 148,566. Fig. 4 shows a detail upon a reduced scale. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the respective figures.
Supposing my invention to be applied to a punching-machine, A is the punch-frame; a, the punching-tool; A, a lever-beam, and A an operating-lever. The latter may be worked by hand, foot, or power. The lever-beam A is connected by links 17 to the sliding punchholder 0.
The punch-frame A is provided with ears a, between which is pivoted by a bolt a one of the rolling or eccentric-toothed cams O. The long arm of the lever-bean1 A is recessed at its end, there being formed ears a between which is pivoted a second rolling or eccentrictoothed cam C. It will be observed by reference to Fig. 4 that the teeth of the lower cam C are upon its inner face, while'those of the upper cam O are upon the outer face. In
other words, the toothed faces of the cams are right and left. Between the two cams O G is placed the head of the operating-lever A which is toothed upon its periphery or edge, so as to suitably engage the teeth of the two cams G C. The operating-lever A is connected to the two cams O O by pairs of links cl d, the lower pair (1 connecting the operating-lever with the lower cam O and the pair cl with the upper cam G. The inner end of the operatinglever A is united by a pair of links 61 to a boss a, formed upon the punchframe A. The function of the links cl, Cl, and d as connected to the head of the operatinglever is to furnish said lever with a shifting pivotal point, allowing it to have the proper movement in rolling over or upon the cams C G in operating the lever-beam A and the punch or tool to which the latter is connected. The eccentric peripheries of the cams O 0 cause a gradually-increasing leverage to be imparted to the lever-beam A. It will be seen that the contact of the operating-lever A with the cams O O is properly maintained by means of the link connections, as described, and that the resistance is borne by the peripheries of the cams and not by the link connections.
This invention is more specially designed for use in machines for punching thin metal, but equally applicable to larger machines, or, indeed, to any machine, whether for punching or otherwise, in which such a concentra-' tion of po ver as is here obtained may be desirable.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A frame, a lever-beam, and eccentrictoothed cams, one pivoted to the frame and the other to the lever-beam, combined with an operating-lever whose head is toothed to engage the toothed cams and placed between said cams in operative relation thereto, substantially as described.
2. A frame, a lever-beam, an eccentric ICQ ranged upon opposite sides of their periphoperating-lever having a head toothed to eneries, combined with an operating-lever havgage said cams and supported in operative ing a head toothed upon its periphery to encontact with and between said cams by a link gage the teeth of the cams, links connecting connection, substantially as set forth.
5 said operating-lever and cams, and links con- In testimony whereof I hereto set my hand 15 meeting said lever with the frame, substanand seal. tially as set forth. DE LANCY KENNEDY. [L. s]
4:. The combination of a frame, alever-beam, Witn esses: two eccentric-toothed cams, one pivoted to the RIOHD. C. SHIMEALL,
10 frame and the other to the lever-beam, and an V. \V. BARNES.
