Description

R. PERMAR.
METAL BENDING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 8, I911 Patehted Apr. 9,1918.

METAL-BENDING TOOL.
Application filed October 8, 1917.
The said invention relates .to tools for bending metal bars, pipes, etc., and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the. accompanying claims.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a light and portable device which may be readily taken to. the stock or material to be worked and there operated, thus avoiding the loss of time in handling the work, inconvenience, and generally unsatisfactory method of. bringing the material to the bending bench as is now practised.
A further purpose of the invention consists in providing a bending tool in which both ends of the bar will be bent simultaneously, and wherein the working handle operates with progressively increasing leverage while bending the bar. The invention is disclosed by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings wherein:
fiigure 1 is a side elevational view of the too Fig. 2, a similar view showing its manner of operation, and
Fig. 3, an end elevational view of the tool.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the different views shown, the tool consists of a body member t constructed preferably of a metal plate having suitable thickness and which is provided with a curved edge 5 that engages with the ground or bearing sur face forming the base for the bending operation. An operating lever 6 is fixedly mounted on the member 4 by means of the two screw bolts 7 and 8 or in any other preferred manner. The operating lever 6 is constructed of angle-iron or channel-iron to give lightness together with the strength necessary to the tool for bending bars or pipes of appreciable size, 6. 9., reinforcing bars for concrete structures.
The means for receiving the piece to be bent consists of a short length of angle- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Serial No. 195,291.
bar .9 secured to. the member 4 by screw bolts 10,.a similar and shorter piece 11 fastened by screw bolts'l2, and a slotted piece 13, to adjustably engage the pair of screw bolts 15 secured to said member 42, Said members 9, 11, and 13 are spaced apart to form a channel-way or recess 16 that receives the bar B to be bent, and by adjusting the member 13 the lengthand degree of bend given the bar may be determined.
The bar Bis held in position during the bending operation and the second bend given thereto by a lever 17 pivotally mounted on the plate 1 by the screw bolt 10, and the lower or hearing end 18 of the lever is twisted, as shown, to give the proper con tact with the bearing surface. The end 19 of said lever has mounted. thereon a grooved roller 20 that engages the bar B, and said roller. together with the ground. or other bearing surface, offers the necessary resistance to said bar for giving thereto the opposite and equal bends indicated in Fig. 2. A retraction spring 21 connects the working lever 6 with the end 19 of the pivoted lever 17 and operates to restore the parts to normal position after each bending operation.
The hearing or fulcruming portion 5 of the tool is curved eccentrically with respect to the operating lever 6 giving a variable fulcrum therefor to the end that the tool will work with progressively increasing leverage in bending the bar. By this provision it will be clearly seen that the additional or augmented force necessary is obtained at the proper period in bending the bar and the entire operation may be carried out in a continuous and even manner.
Although I have illustrated and described a preferred form of the invention, I am aware that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a tool of the character described the combination of a part having a curved fulcruming portion adapted to engage a bearing surface and constructed to hold on one side thereofthe piece for bending, and a lever for operating said part; said curved portlon having the points of its bearing surface varying in length from the lever arm whereby the piece is bent under increasing leverage, substantially as set forth.
2. In a tool of the character described the combination of a part having a curved fulcruming portion adapted to engage a bearing surface and constructed to receive the piece for bending, a lever pivotally mounted on said part adapted to hold and oppositely bend the piece, and an operating le' lever fixedly mounted on said part, substantially as set forth. 7
4. In a tool of the character described the combination of a member having a curved 'fulcruming portion adapted to engage a bearing surface, adjustable means mounted on said member to receive the piece for bending, a lever pivotally mounted on said member having its respective ends adapted to engage with the bearing surface and the piece to hold said piece While bending, an operating lever fixedly mounted on said 1 member, and a. retraction spring connecting said fixed and pivoted lever, substantially as set forth.
5. Ina tool of the character described the combination of a member having an eccentric edge portion providing a variable fulcrum adapted to engage a bearing surface, adjustable means mounted on said member to receivethe piece for bending, a lever pivotally mounted on said member, one end of said lever adapted to engage with the bearing surface, a roller mounted on the other end of the lever adapted to engage with and hold the piece While bending, an operating lever fixedly mounted on said member, and a retraction spring connecting said fixed and as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Denver, Colorado, this 20th day of September, A. D. nineteen hundred and seventeen.
