FRANK S. POSTAL, OF EVART, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHAMPION TOOL AND I'IANDLE lVORKS, OE SAME PLACE.
CAVNT-HOOK' CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 433,817, dated August 5, 1890.
Application filed May 19, 1890. erial No. 352,372. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. PosTAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Evart, in the county of Osceola and State of Michigan, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Crates Vor Frames for Packing Cant-Hooks and Analogous Articles, of which the following is a specification.
pieces of board or wood.
This invention relates to a new and improved crate or frame for packing cant-books and other analogous articles for shipment or for storage; and the invention consists in a frame in which the cant-books or other articles may be packed securely, so that they will not shuck or move in the crate, and therefore can be shipped in a solid'bulk without boxing and without injury to the articles, the object of the invention being to provide a safe and efficient means for shipping canthooks and analogons articles, and also in a frame which may be used for storing said articles when not in use. These objects are accomplished by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation of the improved 'packing-frame containing six cant-hooks inclosed in the frame ready for shipment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same designed to show the position of the hooks when in place. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the main frame, and Fig. et is a detached view of the bindingframe used in connection with the main frame in order to hold the cant-hooks firmly in position.
The frame consists of two side pieces, (shown by C 0,) which are preferably made of thin pieces of wood, and the frame is preferably narrower at the lower end. These side pieces are bound together by means ofcrosspieces, which, in the example of my invention shown in the drawings, consists of a crosspiece E, located at or near the top of the side pieces, a cross-piece E',located some distance from the top, and two cross-pieces E2 and E3. These cross-pieces may be made round or in any other suitable Shape; but in shipping I usually construct them out of rectangular A A show the cant-hooks provided with the ordinary arms. (Shown by B B.) These arms are provided with spurs, as in ordinary cases.
In using my invention the cant-books are placed within the frame, so that each canthook rests 011 one side against the cross-piece E and on the other side against the crosspiece E', while the hooks are packed between the cross-pieces E2 and E3, as shown. The binding-frame D is slipped down over the package, and may be attachcd to the main frame O O by means of nails, pins, or screws, and the frame may be put together with pins, nails, or screws, as shown.
In the drawings, I have shown a lot of canthooks consisting of half a dozen-three on each side-and the hooks resting between the cross-pieces E2 and E3` and covered by the binding-frame D. It will be understood, however, that the binding-frame may be a little higher or a little lower than shown in the drawings without departing in any way from the spirit of my invention; and it Will be further understood that the frame may be made to hold any number of cant-hooks that may be required, although I prefer to put them up in even lots of a half-dozen, dozen, or more. By this packing or crating `the hooks upon the arms B B are prevented from swinging and suffering injury or causing injury to the levers of the cant-hook, and the binding-frame, drawn as it is tightly upon the cant-books, secures the articles packed in a very firm position, sov that they cannot shuck or wear or become loosened in any way from the frame. VVhile. this packing crate or frame is especially useful in packing cant-hooks it may be used for packing and shipping other analogous articles of manufacture or tools, but also for storage when not in use. 'One of the cross-pieces at the bottom might be dispensed with; but I prefer to use two, for the reason that thereby the whole package is more securely held in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is-- 1. A packing-frame for cant-hooks or analoi gous articles of manufacture, consisting of the Io construoted to embrace the side pieces, the
whole adapted to receive and securely hold in position for storage orshipment cant-hooks or analogous articles, Substantially as described.
In witness Whereof I have herennto set my hand and Seal in the presence of two Wit- 15 nesses.
