BARREL AND snvrrinn PACKAGE.
invasi/a.
Application filed December 21, 1911.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs ANDREW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrels and Similar Packages, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to barrels and similar packages used for the storage and transportation of merchandise; its object being to produce a barrel-package having a removable head which shall be secured in place whenl fastened, and yyet be easily and quickly removable and replaceable, without disturbing the hoops or any nails or other fastenings or parts of the barrel.
In certain lines of business the barrel as a package is much used for the shipment of apples, potatoes, eggs and many other commodities of a like nature, and in many such cases it is very desirable that the empty package be returned to the source of supply for other similar shipments. In many such cases, the ordinary cheap barrel is made of staves, fastened by hoops, and in these the common method of fastening the hoops is to engage them in an undercut chine of the stave and compress the staves together against the hoops by external hoops which when forced to position are secured by nailing. |lhe head is removed by a reversal of the process. Of course, there is more or less injury and ultimate practical destruction by the nailing and re-nailing of heads, and by the frequent breaking of the end of the stave at the point weakened by the undercut chine.
One of the principal objects of my invenn tion is to provide a removable head which can be used with an ordinary common barrel of this description without the cutting of a chine for the head and without any disturbance or removal of the hoops.
A further object is extreme simplicity of construction, including the fastening in order that barrels constructed and provided as described may be conveniently used by persons of very limited mechanical skill, and in country districts where mechanical supplies beyond the simple and ordinary, are not usually to be had.
With my construction, therefore, the length of life of the barrel as a transporta- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion package is very much lengthened, and the cost of the barrel as an incident of the price of commodities is correspondingly lessened.
To these ends, my invention consists in a barrel or similar package provided with a removable head consisting of two parts adapted to seat in and engage with the barrel by a plurality of fingers extending into or through the staves, one part or half of the head being permanently provided with acleat extending over the other and provided with means to fasten temporarily to said other portion of a character'adapted to be fastened securely against surreptitious tampering.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a barrel and removable head construction according to my invention; F ig. 2 is a cross section of the upper end of the barrel, showing the removable head engaged and secured in its position; F ig. 3 is a similar view showing the two part head in a half open position; Figs. 4 and 5 are corresponding under-side views of the parts of the removable head showing the fastening adjuncts in position.
Referring now to the drawings, A is the barrel or other package to which my invention is applied; and b1 Z22 two diametrically divided parts constituting the head. Each of the head-parts 51 b2 is provided with one or more radial projections preferably secured to the underside of each of said parts and extending outwardly beyond the periphery, and, when in place, through suitable perforations formed in or through the staves or shell of the package. The two parts of the head, when in place, adjoin edge to edge, and are held together against displacement by a bar or cleat e extending across the upper face of the two parts, b1, o2, perpendicular to their meeting edge, and engaging both in a common plane. permanently fastened to the part b2 and secured by a temporary fastening to the part 1, over which it extends in contact. As will be observed in Figs. l, 2 and 3, when the head is in position closed, the cleat e securely holds the two parts of the head together as one, and also assists in holding them in proper position in relation to the barrel.
This cleat or bar c is The temporary fastening may be made in various Ways, as will be obvious. I prefer, however, as the simplest and, in most cases most convenient fastening, to provide the cleat and the head with which it temporal-ily contacts, with corresponding apertures through which wires w may be passed, as shown lin the figures, and the ends of the wires projecting outward and twisted together and thereby secured and the integrity of the fastening made sure by the application of the ordinary metallic seal as indicated at s in Fig. l. As means for this purpose are commonly known and obtainable in the market, it is not necessary to specify further.
It should also be mentioned that in this barrel or package the head may be applied at one or both ends, and that no chine or undercutting of the staves is necessary, as the head is held in place by the fingers o.
I claim as my invention and desire to se- Copies olfv this patent may be obtained for cure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of two semi-circular removable elements constituting a barrel head; a plurality of metallic prongs attached to each head part and projecting outward beyond the perimeter of the semicircle into corresponding perforations in the sides of the barrel; a crosscleat permanently secured to one and projecting over the other of said parts, and a flexible fastening projected through the free end of said cleat and correspondingly through the contacting member of the head to unite the same. j
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. n
