STEAM HEATING AND COOKING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,130, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed J anuary 22, 1890. Serial No. 337,691. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EFFINGHAM H. lVAR- NEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Storm Lake, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Steam Heating and Cooking Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device that is more especially intended for do mestic purposes; and it consists of certain novel features in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the different parts, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an apparatus embodying my improved features; Fig. 2, a horizontal section in plane 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section in plane 3, Fig. 1, both views looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a boiler or steam-generator, which is of a cylindrical form and without Hues; A, the combustion-chamber orfire-box, and B a jacket inclosing the boiler and combustion-chamber. The boiler is provided with an auxiliary or secondary annular jacket C, which incloses the lower half of the same, being riveted thereto at a and extending downwardly therefrom to a point below the bottom thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. This auxiliary jacket occupies about one-half of the annular space a between the boiler and the exterior jacket B. The annular space between the auxiliary jacket and the boiler forms the chamber 03, for the purpose of utilizing all or nearly all of the heat rising from the combustion-chamber. The heated air ascends into the chamber a and passes around both sides of the boiler, as indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2, and escapes through the apertures a 60 111 the auxiliary jacket into the space between the boiler and the exterior jacket, (see Fig. 2,) and then returns by passing around to the right and left, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. The heated air is thus returned to that side of the boiler from which it started, thereby greatly increasing the area of the heating surface, while the products of combustion finally escape into the smoke-flue a located at the opposite side from the apertures a a in the auxiliary jacket. The position of these apertures is also indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l. The boiler is supported on a number of angular brackets a, bolted to the interior of the exterior jacket B.
When the apparatus is to be used for supplying live steam for heating or cooking purposes, the boiler is partially filled with water, the steam being conducted through the pipe D to the desired point. The waterpipes D D are respectively inserted in the boiler near the top and bottom and connect with the Water-tank E. By filling the boiler full of water a water circulation is obtained and the contents of the tank heated, the' valve 1) in the steam-pipe being closed, as are also thevalves b b in the water-circulating pipes when the boiler is to be used for steaming purposes.
The pipe F and valve d provide means for drawing off the water down to the proper level when the boiler is to be used in generating steam.
G represents the usual safety-valve.

Having thus described my. invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
