SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,470, dated February 26, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE STRING-ER, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the .following, taken in connection with the acthe constituent parts of the boiler, its inclosing-casing or smoke-jacket, and steam-super heater connected with said boiler, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a boiler embodying my improvements, a portion of the smoke-jacket being broken away to better illustrate the interior thereof. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fi g. 3 is a horizontal transverse section on line a", Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse section on line 11y, Fig. 2, a portion of the annular slide being broken away to show the ports in the top of the ashpit; and Fig. 5 is a detached plan view of the steam-superheater.

B, B, and B represent annular boiler-sections of the form of hollow rings, mounted successively one upon the other. The lower section, B, is seated upon the cast-iron ashpit A and constitutes the water-jacket of the fire-pot, and the superposed sections B B form by their inner walls the combustionchamber 0 over the fire-pot, said boiler-sections being provided at their adjacent sides with coinciding ports a n, by means of which the water is allowed to properly circulate a horizontal projection, I, and with a circumferential downward -projecting flange, f, on said projection.
Upon the projection A of the ash'pit at the rear of the boiler is seated a plate, F, which is secured at its lower and upper ends, respectively, to the aforesaid rim j and flange 6, and is formed with thimbles Z Z for the attachment of the exit-pipe 'P, which is formed with the direct-exit branch P, by which it is connected to the upper thimble l, and with the indirect-exit branch P, by which it is connected to the lower thimble aforesaid, the upper or direct branch being provided with the usual damper, d.
The boiler is inclosed in a casing or smokejacket, D, which is seated upon the projection A of the ash-pit, and is secured at its vertical edges to the hereinbefore-described plate F and embraces with its top portion the annular flange t of the cap I.
The upper boiler-section, I3, is formed with the smoke-exit a in range with the upper thimble Z of the plate F, and in order to permit a thorough circulation of the products of the combustion between the smoke-jacket D and exterior of the boiler I3 B 5", I place in the space bet-ween the said parts and'about midway between the thimbles Z Z a horizontal segmental partition, I), terminating with a port, 0, at the front of the boiler or diametrically opposite the side to which the exit-pipe P is connected. By closing the damper d in the direct-exit branch P the products of combustion are compelled to pass from the exit (1 around to the front of the boiler above the partition I), thence down through the port 0, and thence back beneath said partition to the indirect-exit branch P, as indicated by arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
For the purpose of causing the products of combustion to impinge more effectually the exterior of the boiler I form the lower boilersection, B, flaring from its base to its top, the central section, B, tapering from its base to its top, and the upper section, B, again flaring from its base to its top, as shown. Under the crowning-cap I and upon the top of the upper boiler-section, B, I place a superheater, h, of the form of a hollow ring surrounding the upper part of the fuel-magazine m, which is suspended from the edges of an aperture in the center of the cap. Said superheater communicates at one side with the interior of the boiler-section B", and to the diametrically-opposite side of the superheater is connected the steam-pipe '1', which conveys the steam to the apartments of the building to be heated.
p denotes the water-return or supply pipe, which is connected to the lower boiler-section, B. In order to further increase the efficiency of the boiler, I surround the fuel-magazine m by a coiled water-pipe, f, the lower end of which is extended laterally through the boil er-section B and thence connected to the water-return or supply pipe p, as shown at p.
The upper end of the coiled pipe is connected to and communicates with the upper boilersection, B". Said coiled pipe being situated in the combustioil-chamber 0, causes said pipe to become effectually heated and convertthe water passing through it into steam. This pipe also serves to promote the circulation of the water in the boiler.
To facilitate the cleaning of the interior of the smoke-jacket D, I provide the top portion of the projection A of the ash-pit with ports 0 o and place upon said projection an annular slide, 6, provided with ports e c in such relative positions that by turning or shifting laterally the slide the ports 0 6' can. be made to coincide with the ports 0 0, into which position the slide is moved when it is desired to clean the smoke-jacket, said ports allowingthe dust and ashes to drop from the smokejacket into the ash-pit. The said slide 6 is provided with a suitable handle, u, which projects through the smoke-jacket, so as to be accessible at the exterior thereof.

The combination of the upright boiler formed with the central combustion-chamber, C, and provided at its upper portion with the smoke-exit a, the smoke-jacket D, inclosing; said boiler, the horizontal partition I), having the port 0, the pipe I having branches P P, communicating with the smoke-jacket above and below the aforesaid partition and diametrically opposite the port 0, and the damp ers cl in the direct branch P, substantially as described and shown,

The boiler proper, composed of the firepot section B, formed flaring externally from its base to its top, the central section, B, seated upon the section B and tapered externally from its base to its top, and the top section, B", seated upon the section B, and flared externally to its top and formed with the exit a, in combination with aslrpitA, formed with the projection A, the smoke-jacket D, seated upon said projection and provided with the exit P at its base, and the horizontal partition I) in the smoke-jacket between the exits a and P, and provided with the port 0, substantially as described and shown.
