Description

Agrar; A i u UNITED STATES PATENT4 OFFICE.-A
SAMUEL CHAPMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSET-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 43,094, dated June 174, 1864.
To all whom it 171,611.7/ concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL CHAPMAN, of the cit-y, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved inode of constructing, attaching, and detachin g the mountings of corset-clasps; `and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon. i
The nature ot' my inventionconsists in the construction and use ot' detachable bandmountings of corset-clasps and the mode of attaching and det-aching the same to and from the springs and the corsets, in the manner and for the purposes as hereinafter specified and described.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Of metal or other suitable material I form bands of suflicient length topass around the s prings and terminate in or connect with some known or desirable form of hook andv eye, knob, or catch, as shown by Figure l, in the accompanying drawing, (a perspective view of one pair detached from the springs,) in which- A represents a metallic band, looped over and the ends conjointly riveted to B, lthe eye formed of a thicker plate and pierced for the reception of the hook C, formed ot' a piece of round wire, in combination with the band, by turning one end into a hook and attening the remainder gradually to the other end, which is looped over and slipped under the point of the hook, and set in such a manner as to form a spring with its tension pressing the under point,'forming a guard to prevent displacement, except by design. These bands I connect with the springs and therewith to the corset, as shown by Fig. 2, (a perspective view ofthe inside otl a portion of the clasped edges ot'. the garment,) by placing the bands in slots A, B, andG, prepared for the purpose, then passing the spring through a transverse lslot, D, prepared therefor, at or near the point or upper end ot' the spring when in its place, thus securing the bands to their place, and forming an arrangement by which the entire clasp can be readily detached from the gar- Vment when necessary for laundry or other purpose, and the ordinary inconvenience of ripping and restitching a portion ofthe work avoided, as also the tendency ofthe spring 1o turn edgewise by being drawn by a knob riveted in the ordinary clasp at right angles to one side of the spring, thereby rendered less elastic and more liable to wear the cloth and i to an uncomfortable chatting and pressure ot' the person, all ot' which, together with the liability of breakage at the part where the springs are pierced and riveted, is in my mode also avoided, as the springs are not pierced or lriveted and are drawn and held to Atheir place `equally upon both sides and in direct line ot' tension, and being in detachedparts a defective portion may be supplied without incurring the ordinary expense ot an entire set. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l `A corset-fastening arranged and applied with detachable mountings, substantially as described.
SAMUEL CHAPMAN.
