SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,117, dated Septem 1890- Applieation filed May 20,1890. Serial No. 352,445. (No model.)

certain new and useful Improvements in Albums, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to a combined photographic album and case for holding the same, the case being constructed so as to completely inclose the album and form therefor a dust-proof receptacle. Vhen the lid of the case is raised, the album is opened, and also the first leaf thereof raised, so as to display the picture or photograph which it carries to the best advantage, and when one or more of the other leaves are subsequently raised they will recess themselves in the upper lid of the case.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the album-case closed. I Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the album and case when closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the album and case when open, showing the first leaf raised. Fig. 4 is also a longitudinal sectional View ofthe album and case, but shows a number of leaves raised and recessed in the upper lid. Fig. 5 shows a modification.

The letter A designates the upperlid of the case; G, the bottom. The upper lid has a top surface f, two sides I), a front 0, and a back d.

The bottom G projects farther at the front than the lid A, and the front 0, which isattached to the lid, is beveled or flares from the lid-surface f. The cross-section of the back (1 forms an exterior half round or segment of a circle 01', and has on its interior two flat sides 01 01 which form an obtuse angle. The bottom G has two vertical parallel sides g, and the sides I) of the lid fit down between the sides g of the bottom, and the edges b of the said upper sides, when the lid is closed, rest directly in contact with the bottom. It

v will be understood that in the normal position the case sets with its bottom G down, and in this'position the lid A may turn up.

Through the sides 9 of the bottom pass pivoting pins or screws H, which enter the ends of the lid-back (1, thereby pivoting the lid A to allow it to be raised and lowered. A flexible strip 1' connects the back d with the casebottom G. This strip has one edge secured to the bottom at t" and the other edge secured to one of the flat interior sides d of the back, and thus prevents the lid A from falling back too far when raised. It allows the lid to be raised somewhat beyond a vertical line.

The leaves j of the album are bound or fastened together at k in the well-known manner. The topmost leaf is loosely attached to the inside of the top surface f of the lid A by a strip is of some flexible material. Tlns strip has one edge attached to the top leaf and the other to the said case-top f. Thus it will be seen that when the lid A of the case is raised the first leaf of the album will also be raised and take the position shown in Fig. 3.

To prevent the leaves from sliding forward 7:: on the bottom G when the album is being closed, the bottom leaf has its front edge rigidly attached in some suitable manner to the bottom G of the case. In' the present instance a strip glued to the bottom leaf has a nail Z driven through it into the bottom G.

The back part of all of the leaves, which are bound at It, are connected to one of the flat sides d of the lid-back d by a flexible supporting-strip m. One edge of this strip is made fast by glue or otherwise to the bottom leaf, so that when thealbum is closed, as in Fig. 2, said strip m will suspend the rear part of all the leaves, while the front part of the leaves will rest on the bottom G of the case.

When the album-case is opened, the first leaf will take the position shown in Fig. 3, due to the said flexible strip 70, attached to the top f. It will also be seen that when the 0 other leaves of the album are subsequently raised they will recess themselves in the lid, as-seen in Fig. 4, until the last leaf has been reached, which will remain stationary. When the case is closed, the entire album will be 5 inclosed, as seen in Fig. 2', thus securing it from dust.

In Fig. 5 a modification is shown in the manner of attaching the bound album-leaves to the case. The topmost leaf is loosely attached to the lid A, as in the other instance, by a flexible connection It. In this case the rear part of all the leaves is suspended or supported from the lid-back d by resting loosely on a false bottom leaf j, which is suitably hinged at n to the lid-back. This false bottom leaf, instead of being rigidly attached to the case-bottom G, is loosely attached thereto by a flexible connection I.

To prevent the album-leaves from sliding forward at the time the case-lid is being closed, a suitable stop device is rigidly fixed to the bottom G at a point where the front edges of the leaves should come.

The construction shown in Fig. affords all the advantages of that shown in Fig. 2, with the additional advantage that when the case-lid A and first leaf are up, as in Fig. 3, all the other leaves resting loose on the false bottom 7; may be drawn bodily forward, thereby facilitating the entry of card photographs into the usual slits formed in the album-leaves.

Having described my invention, I claim 1. A combined photographic album and inclosing-case consisting of the album-leaves bound or fastened together at the rear edges, a case-bottom G, having two vertical parallel sides g, a case-lid A, having two parallel sides I), a front board 0 and a back (1, and fitting between the parallel sides of the bottom and pivoted thereto by pins H through the said bottom sides entering the ends of the lid-back, and means for rigidly attaching the front edge of the lower leaf to the case-bottom and for loosely attaching the topmost leaf to the lid.

A combined photographic album and inclosing-case, having in combination a casebottom G, having two vertical parallel sides 9, a case-lid A, having two parallel sides I), a front board a and a back d, whose exterioris half-round and fitting between the parallel sides of the bottom and pivoted thereto, the album-leaves bound or united as usual at the rear edges and thereat connected to the said lid-back (Z by a flexible strip m, which is made fast to the lower leaf, so as to suspend the rear part of all the leaves when the album is closed, and means for rigidly attaching the front edge of the lower leaf to the case-bot' tom and for loosely attaching the topmost leaf to the lid.

A combined photographic album and inclosing-case, having in combination a casebottom G, having two vertical parallel sides g, a case-lid A, having two parallel sides I), a front board 0 and a back (i, and fitting between the parallel sides of the bottom and pivoted thereto, the album-leaves bound or united, as usual, at the rear edges, and thereat supported from the lid-back an attachment connecting the lower leaf with the ease-bottom and another connecting the topmostlcaf with the case-lid.
